Vadodara is one of the major cities of Gujarat, and is well-connected by air, train, and road from Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi. Arvind Nivas is located at Dandia Bazar in the heart of the city.
Few people outside Baroda are aware that the great patriot, social and political thinker, poet, teacher, yogi and philosopher, Sri Aurobindo had lived for 14 years in Baroda, when he was in the Baroda State Service of Maharaja Sayaji Rao III. This was during the period between 1893 and 1906.The house where Sri Aurobindo lived for such a long period at one place in India, outside Pondicherry, is now called ‘Árvind Nivas’, which has been developed as a national memorial to him, and is being maintained by Sri Aurobindo Society Baroda.
This house was under the possession of Gujarat Government till 1971, and was being used by the top district officials as their residence. On a request by Sri Aurobindo Society, the Government handed over the possession to it with a view to developing it as a permanent memorial to Sri Aurobindo, and for propagating his teachings and ideals throughout the world.
Sri Arvind Nivas was a private bungalow constructed and owned by one Sri Kashirao Jadhav who was employed in the service of Maharaja of Baroda. This was constructed in 1890, using red bricks and mortar. Aurobindo shifted to this house in 1893, after having stayed at some other houses in Baroda, and lived here up to 1906.
Arvind Nivas consists of 23 big and small rooms, surrounded by an open space of 55,000 s.ft. A small beautiful garden has been developed in front of Arvind Nivas now. On one side of the house is a small shrine, which was constructed on 24-11-1972, where the holy relics of Si Aurobindo are kept.
