Row over book on Sri Aurobindo | Newzstreet: 'via Blog this' - ODISHA TELEVISIONlTD Bhubaneswar: The devotees and admirers of Sri Aurobindo,great freedom fighter and spiritualist, have questioned the unlawful stay ofAmerican author and writer Peter Heehs after the author petitioned theOdisha High Court to reconsider its ban order on his book on Aurobindo titled"The Lives of Sri Aurobindo".

The Odisha High had banned the sale and distribution of the controversial book"The Lives of Sri Aurobindo" and the home department of the stategovernment even had on April 9, 2009 published the order in the gazettenotification. The American author has recently filed a review petition in theHigh Court through his counsel to reconsider its ban order following which thecourt has asked the chief secretary to furnish his reply within two weeks.

Peeved at Peter Heehs' petition in the High Court, devotees of Sri Aurobindohave questioned the unlawful stay of Heehs in India. Argued Prabhu CharanAcharya, follower of Aurobindo,"The Home Ministry of the Government ofIndia had cancelled the visa of Peter Heehs and he has been staying in Indiaillegally. How could a man whose visa has been cancelled by the Government ofIndia file a petition in the High Court flouting the rules?"

Followers of Sri Aurobindo both from Puducherry and Odisha were planning tomeet the chief secretary and demand continuation of the ban order. The counselof Peter Heehs however was not available for comment.

The state government through a gazette notificationin 2009 had banned the book published by Colombia University Press, New York. Claiming thatPeter Heehs had challenged the state government's gazette notification in theOrissa High Court recently, they expressed surprise over how a foreign nationalwas allowed to challenge a government order pertaining to law and order whichis the country's internal matter. "We request the government to take theprocess to its logical conclusion and ensure the arrest and deportation ofPeter Heehs," Prabhu Charan Acharya, a devotee, said. The devotees alsorejected Peter Heehs's claim that he was one of the founders of the Sri AurobindoAshram Archives.

We are not suggesting that the institutions that Sri Aurobindo and The Mother have established, such as the Sri Aurobindo Ashram or Auroville, are free of problems or cannot be criticized. Everyone is free to poke their nose into the internal affairs of these institutions or criticize them to their heart’s content if it so pleases them.

But we are of the opinion that the manufacturing of non-existent problems that are born out of myths and falsehoods – more often than not mischievously planted by individuals or groups that have personal agendas to execute – and the unjustified and baseless criticism that is publicly propagated to wrongly influence public opinion is unethical, immoral and unacceptable.

For instance there is a considerable amount of confusion that has been generated around the editing of Sri Aurobindo’s poem Savitri. Because the issues concerning the editing of the Savitri poem are complex, these issues have provided a fertile ground for the creation of myths and related controversies that have been used to the hilt to exploit people’s sentiments.

But more often than not a common sense approach to understand and evaluate the issues however complex is all that is required. Therefore, the issues presented here will be analyzed with the use of supporting information as well as with a good dose of common sense. Because common sense like a gust of wind can easily bring down the top-heavy edifices of Myths and Falsehoods which like a house of cards can quickly come crashing down.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, has published Barindra Kumar Ghose’s book The Tale of My Exile: Twelve Years in the Andamans (introduced and edited by Dr. Sachidananda Mohanty of the Department of English, University of Hyderabad) in December 2011.

There will be a discussion of this book on 19 January 2012 at the India International Centre, 40 Max Muller Marg, New Delhi at the Conference Room No. 1 of the IIC). Alok Pandey is a seeker on the path of Integral Yoga. A psychiatrist by profession, he has had several encounters with death during the course of his medical practice. A philosopher by temperament, he raised several issues and sought answers to these both within and without. It is only when he came in touch with Sri Aurobindo and the Mother that he found these issues abundantly answered. He has been working in the field of psychiatry with a spiritual approach for more than 15 years. He has developed a working concept of integral health and integral psychology which he is using in his life and practice. He is one of the founders of Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Integral Health and Research (SAIIIHR), Pondicherry.

Amalendu De, M.A, D.Litt, F.A.S., retired as Guru Nanak Professor of Indian History, Jadavpur University. Subsequently he served as the General Secretary and President of the Asiatic Society and rose to prominence as a distinguished historian of the country. He has thrown new light on Sri Aurobindo’s role in the freedom movement of our country. His research works are innumerable.

Dasharathi Sengupta, born in January, 1941, was an Asst.Prof.of Political Science in West Bengal Education Service.His basic interest is in Political Philosophy.It is this which has led him to become a student of Sri Aurobindo’s political ideas in the later days of his teaching career spanning roughly four decades.

Debashish Banerji is an English Literature graduate from Elphinstone College, Bombay University and an MA in Computer Science, University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA. A former President of the East-West Cultural Centre and Sri Aurobindo Centre, Los Angeles, USA, from 1992-2005, he has a PhD in Indian Art History from University of California , Los Angeles. He teaches Art History at the Pasadena City College and Indian Studies at the University of Philosophical Research, Los Angeles, USA. He has been a longstanding student of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga and its contemporary relevance, on which subjects he has spoken and written extensively.

Georges Van Vrekhem (b.1935) is a Flemish speaking Belgian who writes in English. He became well-known in his country as a journalist, poet and playwright. For some time he was the artistic manager of a professional theatre company. He gave numerous talks and presentations in America, Europe and India. He got first acquainted with the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother in 1964. In 1970 he joined the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, and in 1978 he became a member of Auroville, where he is still living and writing.

He wrote Beyond Man, the Life and Work of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother (1997), The Mother, the Story of Her Life (2000), Overman, the Intermediary between the Human and the Supramental Being (2000), Patterns of the Present, in the Light of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother (2001), The Mother: the Divine Shakti (2003) and Hitler and His God – The Background to the Nazi Phenomenon (2006). Books by him are translated into Dutch, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. He was awarded the Sri Aurobindo Puraskar for 2006 by Sri Aurobindo Samiti, Kolkata.

Kireet Joshi (b. 1931) studied philosophy and law at the Bombay University. He was selected for the I.A.S. in 1955 but in 1956, he resigned in order to devote himself at Pondicherry to the study and practice of the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. He taught Philosophy and Psychology at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education at Pondicherry and participated in numerous educational experiments under the direct guidance of The Mother.

In 1976, the Government of India invited him to be Education Adviser in the Ministry of Education. In 1983, he was appointed Special Secretary to the Government of India, a post he held until 1988. He was Member-Secretary of Indian Council of Philosophical Research from 1981-1990. He was also Member-Secretary of Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishthan from 1987-1993. He was the Vice-Chairman of the UNESCO Institute of Education, Hamburg from 1987-1989.

From 1999-2004, he was the Chairman of Auroville Foundation. From 2004-2006, he was Chairman of Indian Council of Philosophical Research. From 2006-2008, he was Editorial Fellow of the Project of History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture. Curremtly, he is Education Adviser to the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Kundan Singh A devotee and servant of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, Kundan Singh, Ph.D. is an adjunct faculty at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Palo Alto and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), San Francisco from where he also obtained his doctorate in Humanities.

An author of a recently published book titled “The Evolution of Integral Yoga: Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, and Swami Vivekananda,” and a few book chapters and journal articles like “Beyond Postmodernism: Towards a Future Psychology,” “Relativism, Self-Referentiality, and Beyond Mind,” and “Relativism and Its Relevance for Psychology,” his areas of research include Integral Yoga of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, Contemporary and Traditional Vedanta, Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism, Sufism of the Indian subcontinent, Indian Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology, Social Psychology, Depth Psychology, Postmodern Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Epistemology, Critical Thought and Deconstruction, Cross-cultural Psychology and East-West Studies among a few others. Prema Nandakumar obtained her Ph.D in 1961 for her study of Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem Savitri. Since then, she has been an independent researcher, publishing critical and biographical works. As a translator, her career spans half a

century, with the UNESCO publishing her book on Subramania Bharati. Dr. Nandakumar’s translation into English of Manimekalai, the ancient Buddhist epic in Tamil has been received with enthusiasm. She is also a creative writer in English and Tamil. One of her recent publications is K.R. Srinivasa Iyengar, a monograph on her father for Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi (2008). Dr. Nandakumar is a frequent keynote speaker and draws her inspiration from sources as varied as the Vedas, ancient Hindu and Buddhist epics, ancient and modern Indian literature. She is a recipient of several awards, including the Sri Aurobindo Puraskar and Panditha Ratna.

Ranajit Sarkar (b.1932) At the age of 12 he joined Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry; studied and later taught there at the International Centre of Education. In 1965 went to France, studied at the Sorbonne; he got his doctorate at the University of Aix-Marseille. From 1970 until his retirement he taught Sanskrit literature and Indian culture at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He has published poems, literary studies and Sri Aurobindo’s thoughts. He lives in the Netherlands.

Richard Hartz studied philosophy at Yale University and received an M.A. in South Asian languages and literature from the University of Washington. He has worked in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Archives since 1980.

Saurendranath Basu is a retired Reader In English. Apart from his academic pursuits – he did valuable research work on Sir Herbert Read, the English poet and critic of art and poetry – he is primarily interested in a reconciliation between the facts and philosophy of life. Thus having made profitable contact with some great creative minds, especially Rabindranath, he passes his days now reading Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and writing on them in the hope that they would open their door for him some day.

Sonia Dyne, born and educated in England, graduated from St Anne’s College, Oxford in 1956 with a degree in Modern Languages. Soon afterwards she went to Singapore where she married and raised a family. She remained there for nearly 50 years, working as a teacher and free lance editor, and continuing her language studies with a post graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics. In 1973 she made the life changing discovery of Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri and later became a member of the Sri Aurobindo Society of Singapore. At the request of the late Devan Nair, she took over the Chairmanship of the Society and remained in that office for almost 20 years. Following a visit to Auroville in 1979, she took a keen interest in the development of the township. Currently she is a Board member of Auroville International and a trustee of Auroville International UK.

Swami Pratyagatmananda Saraswati (1880-1973), who in earlier life was known as Pramathanath Mukhopadhyaya, was one of the brightest luminaries of 19^th century Bengal, who shed light on various aspects of life: political, historical, philosophical as well as mystical. The first nationalist resurgence of India, which had its roots in Bengal, drew this brilliant young man when he had just completed his academic career and he decided to dedicate himself to the service of the motherland by holding up the ancient ideal of education and culture through his mighty pen. Equally at home in Sanskrit, English and Bengali, with a style all his own, he made a rich contribution to various newspapers, periodicals, journals and also wrote voluminous books, being invited to deliver lectures by the University of Calcutta and other learned societies.

A colleague of Sri Aurobindo at the National Council of Education and also of Ramendrasundar Trivedi in the Ripon College as well as a collaborator with Arthur Avalon, pseudonym of Sir John Woodroffe, Pramathanath developed, very early in life, a wide philosophical outlook, which sought to synthesise the modern scientific spirit of enquiry with the ancient intuitive method of approach to reality. He firmly believed that what the ancient Rishis have left for us has a deep scientific basis and it is for us to explore it with the help of modern science. It is this belief that led him to interpret the age-old Vedanta through modern mathematical terms and symbols and in this way he was absolutely unique and original.

Later in life when he withdrew himself in his own inmost sanctuary, his one and sole preoccupation was to discover the rationale of Mantras and Tantras. On the pattern of the Vedanta Sutras, he wrote in Sanskrit his Japa-Sutram in four adhyas (chapters) and four padas (sections) and an exhaustive commentary thereon in Bengali, which have been published in six big volumes, running to more than 2000 pages. This may be considered his magnum opus, in which is reflected his poetical genius, literary talent as well as his philosophical insight.

Aurobindo Ghosh was born on 15 August 1872. He was a brilliant student and highly qualified, freedom fighter and afterwards a philosopher, yogi. Freedom fighter Aurobindo Ghosh was converted into Shri Aurobindo. He was very much involved in freedom movement of India. He was arrested in 1908 in connection with the Alipore Bomb Case. He was in the jail for one year. From that time transformation of Aurobindo Ghosh from freedom fighter to a spiritual leader started. In 1910 he took retirement from politics and moved to Pondichery. The world found a philosopher, a guru in Shri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo died on December 5, 1950.

During my childhood, I've been conditioned to think that there was nothing above the intellect. THAT is the pinnacle of mankind, were they saying but what I later experienced told me otherwise so I began the quest of who I really am and found the writings of Sri Aurobindo. This Rishi was born in Calcutta (India) on August 15, 1872.

One of his book is called "Savitri - A legend and a Symbol". Of all the books I've read during my entire life, it is the most astounding one and this yet unsurpassed masterpiece will probably remain unequaled even in many thousand years. Governor J B Patnaik inaugurated the Aurobindo Bhavan at Panjabari in the city on Sunday. Sri Aurobindo Society is an international society striving for a new world order based on spirituality. It would soon start joint programmes with teachers from school to university-level in Assam to transform the education system in the state. International secretary of the society, Gopal Bhattacharjee said all aspects of life have to be raised to the highest possible level and transformed into a new consciousness guided by the divine consciousness. The society gives utmost importance to integral education, which has a wider scope for an individual to learn every moment through formal and informal education, based on the ideals of Sri Aurobiundo and The Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Bhattachrjee said.

Governor opens Aurobindo Bhavan Assam Tribune Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 31 – Governor JB Patnaik today formally inaugurated the Aurobindo Bhavan at Panjabari at a function organised by Sri Aurobindo Society.

In his address, Patnaik lauded the efforts of the organisers in setting up the Aurobindo centre in Assam, and said that it would help spread the eternal message of the great saint-philosopher of modern India in the North-east.

Referring to Sri Aurobindo’s prophecy that a day would come when the division of India’s would go and it would again become its undivided self, the Governor exhorted all to “pray and work for that day to come and try in the meanwhile to tread on the noble path he has shown for us.”

Giving an account of Sri Aurobindo’s life and works, Patnaik said that he was not just the greatest saint and philosopher of modern India but was the noblest messenger of the eternal essence ingrained in Indian philosophy to a global audience for ages. Gopal Bhattacharjee, international secretary, Sri Aurobindo Society, Pondicherry, Prof KK Deka, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh Universty, among others, were present at the function.

Sri Aurobindo Society's city branch to open soon - The Sentinel By our Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, July 30:

After opening up a few centres in the State, Sri Aurobindo Society – an international organization recognized by the Government of India – will open its new branch in Guwahati. The Sri Aurobindo Bhavan will be inaugurated by Assam Governor JB Patanaik on July 31 at Panjabari in the city.

The branch has been set up with the objective of spreading the teachings and ideals of Aurobindo Ghosh. It will initially start a few meditation programmes, said Sri Aurobindo Society international secretary and Northeast coordinator Gopal Bhattacharjee.

A meeting and a cultural programme will be held on July 31 at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra. Dibrugarh University KK Deka will attend the programme as the chief guest and will release the Assamese translation of four books – Prayers and Meditation, Sunlit Path, Supreme Discovery and Sidelights on the Mother. The books have been translated by Sri Aurobindo Society, Assam State committee secretary Indrajit Goswami.

Sri Aurobindo Society Guwahati branch secretary Ellora Goswami said that among other projects, the branch plans to build a library which will include books and writings of Aurobindo Ghosh.

Mahabiplabi Arabindo was released on 1971 Bengali film starring Dilip Roy, Tarun Kumar, Bhanu Banerjee, Gita Dey, Subrata Chatterjee, Ajitesh Banerjee, Shekhar Chattapdhyay, Nirmal Ghosh, Padma Debi. The Bengali film is directed by Dipak Gupta. Hemanta Mukhopadhyay scored the music in the film. The story is as Arabinda Ghosh the brilliant boy of Bengal after completion of his education from abroad joined Baroda estate. He was well-connected with Bengal from Baroda. Arabinda wrote some great article on independence from there. Armed revolution took and important role in Bengal under the leadership of different leaders in that time. Arabinda came from Baroda and joined that movement. Later he was convicted in Alipore Bomb Case. C R Das the great leader and advocate stood in the support of Arabinda Ghosh.
He fought against the British and after a long battle C R Das won the case. Arabinda came out of jail with a different mind. He started his new life on the path of religion and philosophy and became an avid devotee of god... Watch it on (Streamindian.com)

Anguish and After « MURALI SIVARAMAKRISHNAN

Sri Aurobindo and Ramana spoke to me. I lived through the struggles of these great minds. While Ramana sounded simple at the outset he made me pause and think. Sri Aurobindo was tough. But then I was fortunate enough to read through all that he wrote, not missing out any single line. His complexity I found was only at the outside, while deep within he was like I was, confused and bewildered, confronted with a million existential questions, relishing the great aesthetic experience of being and becoming, at one with the universe. Of course it took me only a little while to recognize his great and steadfast will that gave him the continued impetus to forge ahead in the supreme quest of the spirit. I felt I understood the reason for his overt withdrawal from the world of politics into the silence and solitude of the ashram. It was not a withdrawal at all but an all inclusive immersion into the larger being of the cosmic spirit.

What delighted me most about this amazing intellectual yogi was his continued openness to the questions of the body and the intellect. Someone had called him a radical mystic. Yes, Sri Aurobindo gave clear cut answers to many of my questions. However the greatest challenge was in unlocking these observations in the laboratory of ones own mind. Behind every Jekyll there is this Hyde. It might be one thing to follow these teachings of these noble masters as teachings but another to experientially encounter them. My questing mind was always alert and devious, mischievous. I wanted the cake and to eat it too. Yoga and spirituality demanded great disciplining of the senses and the mind. I was worried whether these might lead to an incarceration of the sensuous self. I wanted the passions of the body and the soul to be equally well balanced. It was a virtual impossibility.

I carry with me now the monograph of Sri Aurobindo's “The Mother” which I read many years ago. His description of Mahashakti Mahakali Mahasaraswati is a seminal description of the ideal woman. So as I said, little windows and doors were beginning to open. I started to focus on women in myth and legends, but I couldn't just do them the way I was taught.

I had to re-imagine them and I realised that my strength would be new ways of speaking the old, but in a very convincing way — not just changing costume and doing the same choreography, or keeping the old costume of classical dance and just doing new choreography.

But here we come back to the very beginning of this introduction; the question then is, whether a European Union is just a temporary formation on the way to a spiritual mankind and can thus be – on the long rung – neglected as a collective body or if there is some kind of eternal truth in the European-unit, some kind of a true individual, that does not depend on present forms or ideas, if there is not only a vital soul, a life-soul and a communal mind, but as well the genuine spark of the divine developing into a European psychic being.

Do we have to deal, in the end, in a spiritual age, with the true individual, the true nation and a true humanity or with the true individual, the true nation, the true Europe/Asia/America/Africa/Australia, and the true humanity? – Is continental grouping thus truly genuine or a temporary phenomenon?

So much as food for reflection for a hopefully inspiring and integrating experience.

The ancient rishis and yogis realized, like their modern counterparts, that what ordinary people know about themselves is not worth much, but they did not shy away from the problem. Instead they analysed the causes for this human incapacity and then they set to work on methods to overcome these defects. They found that the two main problems were egoism, and a too naive reliance on what the senses make us believe.

Regarding the former, they found that the egoism expressed itself through desires, preferences and the natural “vested interests” we all have in the outcome of our self-observations. All such factors lead in their own way to distortions. What is more interesting is that they found that it is actually possible to remove these obstacles, and that this not only leads to greater clarity of thought, but also to a remarkable type of unconditional inner joy and effectiveness in action. The latter may be a surprise to those who have been brought up on the virtues of “ego-strength”, but there is convincing scientific evidence that the detachment furthered by yoga and meditation actually does lead to greater social effectiveness and life-satisfaction. An anecdotal but almost certainly historical support for this comes, besides, in the form of the life of the Buddha, a living example of selflessness, and yet, one of the most influential individuals who ever lived. …

Given the obvious treasures of psychological knowledge one can find alike in ancient scriptures like the Rg Veda, the Upanishads, and the works of modern yogis like Sri Aurobindo, it would be a great loss for humanity if modern Psychology chose to ignore this contribution. For the rishis developed something which mainstream psychology did not: a rigorous and effective method to develop detailed and reliable knowledge of the subjective domain. As a college student has won prizes in inter college competitions in Drama, Mono Acting, Elocution, Sanskrit Recitation and Drawing-Painting.

He gave up his profession completely when he was taken up as a Member of the Executive Committee of Sri Aurobindo Society at Pondicherry. He has visited about 75 cities in India and abroad conducting Youth Camps, Study Camps, Seminars, giving Talks and presentations at various organizations, schools, colleges and universities. Has a very wide experience in communicating with the Students, young as well as old. He is interested in learning and calls himself a Life Time Student of “LIFE DIVINE “ which integrates the Art and Science of Living.

I am pointing out that I see no correlation between belief in transcendent values and decreed by a divine being and recognition of the dignity of humans, the planet, and other creatures that populate the earth.

Along these lines, I’m inclined to go so far as to suggest that a recognition of finitude, that this is it, that you die and that worms will eat you, that there’s no ultimate teleology towards which history is moving, that there’s no ultimate salvation, that this planet is all we have, and so on actually fosters a greater reverence for other humans, life, and the planet. If I believe that a God is going to save me someday, that history will culminate in some final confrontation, etc., it’s easier to have no regard for the present, this world, other people, and the planet. If I believe that I am acting on behalf of a God, it’s easier to kick the shit out of a homosexual or destroy a group of people that practices a different religion. If this is all there is, however, if every life is a singularity that will never be repeated again and that utterly ceases to exist with death, if there’s no escape hatch from this planet whether through the “end of days” or interstellar travel (I’m pretty skeptical about the possibility of interstellar travel given the great distances between stars and limitations of technology), I think you tend to value life a bit more and this world a bit more. One will respond that life was cheap for the Stalinists and that they were secularists. However, that’s just it: they thought that there was the possibility of a secular salvation, a final point in history where all would be reconciled, and therefore saw anything as being justified in the present to produce that salvation. Life becomes cheap when the present is subordinated to the future in this way. Yet if we are without any ultimate future, without any final reconciliation, such a teleology becomes a little less compelling. It seems to me that without theological frameworks life is often very cheap. It’s hard, I think, to find life cheap if it is essentially rare in the universe and this is it.

Towards the Integral: A New Dimension of Being: A talk by Aster Patel Jul 5 2011

As the "integral" becomes a reality of our creative imagination and we explore this new dimension, how do we move toward realizing the integral being? What are the steps on the way? What is this quality of consciousness, of knowing, feeling, willing, and acting? Does this process create a field around us that changes the very texture of life and draws others into it? This interaction and the drawing of all into a single, complex process—is this the way of the future?

Aster Patel was raised in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, and studied at the International Center of Education there, where she now teaches. She completed her PhD in comparative philosophy at the University of Paris IV (Sorbonne). The title of her dissertation was "A Comparative Study of the Philosophies of Sri Aurobindo and Henri Bergson." She was invited to hold the Sri Aurobindo Chair of Philosophy at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and she received the Sri Aurobindo Puraskar award in 2005. She has published papers on philosophy, integral psychology, education, and yoga; and she is the author of "The Presence of Time." She has been engaged in the experiment of Auroville for over three decades and is a member of the governing board of the Auroville Foundation.

A review petition of 2009 "YMCA vs. Holy Mother Aurobindo Ashram" filed in the Shillong Bench was heard on Thursday through video conferencing by the Bench of Justice BK Sharma and Justice AC Upadhya of Gauhati High Court sitting in the Principal Bench in Guwahati while the parties and their respective counsels represented by senior advocate VK Jindal, advocate S. Chakraborty and A. Thangkhiew argued the case from the Shillong Bench.

After hearing the arguments, the High Court passed its "judgment" disposing off the matter by rejecting the petition within an hour. The review petition was filed by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) against a judgment by the same bench in 2009 regarding a land dispute with Aurobindo Ashram.

Historically it is well known that a learned Chanakya was responsible for the creation of the mighty Mauryan Empire. Swami Ramdas had Shivaji Maharaj’s patronage. Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo though they were sanyasis did not always wear orange robe and influenced great thinkers from political circles. Also many illustrious Gurus were renunciates (sanyasis) like Parahamsa Yogananda, Swami Rama, Swami Sahajanand, Swami Shivanand, Swami Niranjananand, Swami Satyanand among others who supported social upliftment.

In the not so distant past India has had larger than life social-reformer-saints like Sree Narayanguru (Kerala), Swami Keshwanand (Rajashtan), Jai Jalaram Bapa (Gujarat), Swami Dayanand Saraswati (Gujarat), Sathya Sai Baba (Andhra Pradesh) among others. In ancient times Gurus like Vashisht, Agastya and Vishwamitra advised the rulers. This heritage shows that Gurus were not just showing the society the way to God but also got involved in political and social issues. In fact people who are detached to material things are better able to do good to society.

This epoch-making work of Sri Aurobindo on Vedic mysticism is of immense import as far as hermeneutics and psychology are considerd. It is the most original contribution of Sri Aurobindo to the modern knowledge systems. To the reader of this work, Indra is no longer a mere mythological deity, but the master of his own 'indriyas', senses, with whose active help, it would be easy to win new frontiers of awareness. Varuna is not simply the lord of the sea but the highest psychological state of oceanic vastness, light and purity into which we all must aspire to surge forth. By this simple exercise of replacing the connotations, one turns with profit the Vedic text of great antiquity into an excellenct self-management treatise. The Veda is no more prisoned in rituals and conventions but becomes a handbook of self-culture.

As a result, thematic unity between the Veda and the Upanishads has been restored. By addressing the most primordial existential issues besetting human life, the Veda is a univesal testament, and Sri Aurobindo has delivered it from the confines of a particular religion. Permalink

Hymns on Creation and Death: In the Veda and Upanishads by Dr. R. L. Kashyap

The part II deals with the Word, which is the agency from which creation actually proceeds. It has 2 suktas including the Vak Sukta. The topic of creation cannot be separated from the topic of destruction. The Brhadaranyaka mantra on creation mentions the maxim, 'Hunger that is death'. The famous phrase is from the Taittiriya Upanishad, 'Eater is eaten' (adyena atti, Tai. U. 2.3) indicates the intimate connection.

Part III deals with Death viewed in the broad sense of the word. Part III is entitled, 'Veda, Rites and Yama'. Chapter 14 gives an overview of some popular rites (samskaras) performed at various stages of life. Chapter 15 focuses only on the final rites along with the associated mantras; some relevant mantras are also in Chapter 17. Because of sheer laziness and ignorance, many Hindus ascribe several irrational beliefs on the topic of death and Yama to Veda. Chapter 14 indicates the beliefs which can be traced to Vedas and those which have no place in the Vedas. Chapter 18 gives an excellent description of the Heaven which has none of the earthly enjoyments. Chapter 19 deals with the topic of return to earth from the home of Death. About the Author: Dr. R.L. Kashyap is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana in USA. He had his masters degree form Indian Institute of science, Bangalore and obtained Ph.D. form Harvard University. He is the recipient of many international awards. He has authored more than 350 research papers. He has guided more than 50 Ph.D. Scholars. He has written extensively on Veda. He has given the word-meaning of all the verses from the first 121 suktas of Rig Veda. He has to his credit six major books on the Veda. He is the Honorary Director of Sri Aurobindo Kapali Sastry Institute of Vedic culture, Bangalore.

To remember dear Bhavana Auroville Village Action Group (AVAG) would like to invite you this Saturday, to join them for a little get together to remember our great friend Bhavana Dee. On 11th of June it will be one month since she left her body. They would like to meditate together and if there are people who want to speak and remember her in a group, they would be very happy to provide the space for it. They want to connect Aurovilians, villagers and everybody else, who would like to join, in an open gathering and sharing about Bhavana.
