The 100 years of the Master’s arrival in Pondicherry are today celebrated: politicians will probably garland statues of Sri Aurobindo, ‘scholars’ will recount his achievements and the contribution of the State of Pondicherry to his inner realizations; many will quote Rabindranath (who visited him in 1928): “Rabindranath, O Aurobindo, bows to thee! O friend, my country's friend, O Voice incarnate, free, Of India's soul....The fiery messenger that with the lamp of God Hath come...Rabindranath, O Aurobindo, bows to thee,” but there is another side to the coin.

During the 40 years of his stay in Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo faced constant enmity, to put it mildly, not only from sections of the local population, but also from the representatives of the British Crown, the French Administration as well as local politicians.

Mind and Body Struggle for Supremacy in the Manifestation from Sri Aurobindo Studies

A subject of never-ending study and debate is the question of the primacy of the mind or the body in terms of our psychological actions. Psychologists have taken positions on both sides of this question, and everywhere in between. There are those who believe that the body is first, primary and the underlying cause and foundation of the emotions, the mind and our creative expressions. They try to explain everything by combinations of amino acids and the physical and physiological organisation of the body that means that mind is a function of the brain.

Others take the position that the body is more or less illusory, and despite a habitual pattern of thought, which leads to habitual bodily responses, it is actually the mind that creates the form and thus, the body can be changed or adjusted by changing the mental framework.

We need not pay much attention to the continuing Satheesh-Tusar imbecility, nor need it surprise us if it should lug along with it a set of other imbecilities. It seems the whole thing is just unstoppable, perhaps because such blogs commercially thrive only on controversies. If there are no contents, if there are no specifics the quickest and the wisest thing to do is to trash them. But when such glorious thrivers try to trash the 1950-51 edition of Savitri itself, the one which practically came out during the time of the author himself, then the matters become serious. In such circumstances it will be wrong to keep ascetically quiet, quiet by simply saying that the Master knows how to take care of such inanities, such absurdities, that he doesn’t need defence from the scrawny, we the poor earthlings. It might even be suggested that it would be better to avoid it lest one is dubbed, as does the usual cliché go, an egoist.

Yet a question can puzzle one, as from where could such nonsensicalities emanate at all. Could it be that these are coming from some disgraceful office or foundation named Satheesh-Tusar Absurdity where people do not look for facts, where people have scant regard for facts? In any case, it definitely appears to be a place where people do not read things or, if at all they do, they show little capacity to understand things.

PUDUCHERRY: A hundred years since Sri Aurobindo set foot in this seaside town, Puducherry reverberated with divine music in celebration. In an event organised by the Department of Tourism, Department of Art and Culture and the Aurobindo Ashram, some of the musical stalwarts in the country mesmerised Puducherrians all weekend.

It was a heady concoction of Carnatic and Hindustani music on each day, as audiences filled the Ashram Theatre to capacity, spilled on to the courtyard and sat till late into the night, to savour the music. Carnatic nadaswaram vidwan duo Kasim – Babu kick-started the festival on Friday evening with a scintillating performance, followed by Uday Bhawalkar's Hindustani vocal concert in the Dhrupad tradition. Saturday's concert by R. Vidya Bharati, descendent of poet Subramanya Bharathi had great significance in the light of the poet's friendship with Sri Aurobindo. Renowned sarangi player Murad Ali Khan later enthralled the audiences well into the night, with an awe-inspiring performance.
