Anniversary of The Mother's arrival at the Puducherry Railway station

The 102nd anniversary of the visit of Mirra Alfassa, or The Mother, to the city was celebrated with a session of meditation and silent prayer on Tuesday.
A special commemoration was held at the Puducherry Railway station by The World Peace Trust of Pondicherry and the Bangavani Trust of Nabadwip Dham West Bengal. The 102nd anniversary of the visit of Mirra Alfassa, or The Mother, to the city was celebrated with a session of meditation and silent prayer on Tuesday.
It was in 1914, at the age of 36, that Mirra, accompanied by her spouse Paul Richard, embarked on two different journeys; one an exacting trip stretching over three weeks by ship, boat and train to this city, the other one of life-changing self-discovery and enlightenment that would follow her momentous meeting with Sri Aurobindo in this city.
“The Mother arrived at Puducherry Railway station on the morning of March 29, 1914. While approaching Puducherry, the Mother had a vision of a huge column of light and the intensity of the light became greater when she arrived in the city. She met Sri Aurobindo at his Ashram and recognised him as her guru or Krishna,” Dibyendu Goswami, convenor of the Bangavani Trust told The Hindu.
Though The Mother returned home after her first arrival in 1914 she came back to settle here permanently in 1920 and took charge of the Ashram, Mr. Goswami said.
While the centenaries of both the events were celebrated on a grand scale in 2010 and 2014, the World Peace Trust here and the Bangavani Trust based in Nabadwip Dham, West Bengal, have been celebrating the anniversaries of both events with various programmes since 2002.
At Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a large number of devotees and followers of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo thronged the premises to commemorate the occasion of The Mother’s first arrival in Puducherry.

March 30, 2016 - Many have started restricting the Indian worldview to some cultural/moral aspects only. For politico-economic aspects, they rely on systems that derive from schools of thought belonging to the Left-Right spectrum. This is creating identity crisis among Indians. 
People find workplace value system in direct conflict with the value system they believe in. The workplace doesn’t let one prosper in all the dimensions. Professional life does not align with the idea of evolution a common Indian possesses. We need to recognize that choice of technology is at the bottom of all this.

Philosophy according to contemporary conditions in India and development of thought in the West and East. All these philosophies, with minor differences among them, have maintained what can be called integral humanism. This integral humanism is the philosophy of our age. Sri Aurobindo presented a more elegant model of this ancient theory and divided the human into physical, emotional, mental, intellectual and spiritual, since this model has gained currency in contemporary humanistic psychology, and now it is common place to to look at a human being as an integral being who has physical needs, emotional needs, spiritual needs etc. This is the basis behind Deen Dayal's IH. IH is a political theory that says that the state need to cater to all the needs of a human being, and not just look at one in exclusion. In Marxist humanism, for example, only physical needs are important; in secular humanism spiritual needs are ignored.
Also humanism and dharma are not mutually exclusive, in fact Krishna in the Gita says manavata dharma or humanist dharma is the highest dharma. When we say India is "dharmic" we actually mean it is humanist, and the type of humanism we are talking about is integrally humanist.

LUDHIANA: The students of Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management of class of B.Com Semester 2B organised a panel discussion on topic "How to Make Life Better". The students who took part as panel member were Mehak, Ritika Arora, Simer Madhok, Rohish Bedi and Gautam Bansal.
Students discussed that we have made the life complicated by unnecessarily adding so much expectations from others. Also present life has become mechanical and full of distractions for youth. They stressed that if we compare the life of city with villages, life in villages is much peaceful and satisfied.
A student, Mehak while addressing to other students, said, "We should treat others well and also must take one hundred per cent responsibility for our lives. Focussing on present, and enjoying what we have and not regretting what we don't have."
Positive attitude and living in the right state of mind were some of the other aspects added in the discussion by the members.

If you look at Tagore’s translation of his own work – as an author you can argue that he is the most authentic translator of his own work – the English versions do not come close to the Bengali, so authenticity is not as simple as that…
I am a devotee and follower of Sri Aurobindo and the best translations of the Vedas or Upanishads or Kalidas, I have enjoyed those by him. And if one reads his translations, one sees how it looks to be translated beautifully. He brings out the spirit of Kalidas, of the Vedic seers. It’s not just the words. He makes it more beautiful. At the same time he feels that translating Sanskrit into English or any European language is an impossibility. But if the translator goes deep and identifies himself with the spirit of the text and tries to bring out something of that spirit, that is a fairly good translation.
One who understands the spirit [of the work] can do a fairly good translation. You cannot have a truly authentic or perfect translation, but something close to the spirit of the poet. That much can be managed. One cannot ever experience the beauty of the text when it is read in its original. Sanskrit is something beyond that.
Our project is not just to offer translation but through that to make them aware of the spirit of the Sanskrit and the readers should come back to the language.

In the collected works of Kapali Sastry edited by Sri M.P. Pandit, the volumes one, four, five, six and ten, deal with Rig Veda. His major work on the Veda is Siddhanjana in Sanskrit. This book has a long introduction (bhumika) highlighting the main ideas of Rig Veda, and also responding to the criticisms of the spiritual interpretation of the Veda. The Sanskrit work and its translation are in volume 4 of the collected works. The remaining part of Siddhanjana has a detailed commentary with word-word meaning of the first 121 Suktas of Rigveda (First Mandala).The Sanskrit part is in volumes 4 and 5.
The English translation with word to word meanings of the first 32 Suktas is in volumes 4 and 6. The summary translation of the hymns 33-121, based on the Siddhanjana is in volume 10 of CW. SAKSI has brought out a new edition of the English translation of the introduction, entitled, ‘A New Light on the Veda’, in a user friendly format.

SAKSI has published a compilation of the writings of Sri.T.V. Kapali Sastry in English entitled, ’Unveiling the light in the Veda’ edited by Dr. R.L. Kashyap. Sri Aurobindo's knowledge of Christian theology was rudimentary

In 1989, British Roy, a retired police sergeant and school welfare officer, visited Auroville after the demise of his wife and was approached by Andre Tardeil, who at the time was setting up extended vocal training at New Creation for village youth and needed someone to coordinate the educational efforts there. Half a year later Roy returned and started the long way towards funding and establishing New Creation Bilingual School, now the well running CBSE-accredited Aikiyam School. In the evening of February 29th, Roy (Alistair Wicks) of New Creation passed away in his UK home in the presence of his daughter and son, due to failure of kidneys. He was 92 years old.
Thank you, Roy, for the enormous work you have done for Auroville; you will be remembered with love and gratitude by numerous youth from the village who have found a solid place in society, thanks to you. Our love and sympathy go out to Roy’s son and daughter, and his many adopted pupils here, in particular Tixon and Vanitha, who now run Malarchi.
