Contemporary relevance of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Sri Lanka Guardian (blog) - Basil Fernando "Ambedkar’s political thought is still very relevant to not only to the politics of India but also to politics in South Asia in general. South Asian countries are today facing deep crises, unable to develop political and social institutions to guarantee stability to their societies primarily because of centuries of oppressive and social political systems that were their heritage due to the caste system."

A few great leaders in India understood the depth of the internal bondage of the Indian mind created by this history. Some saw it purely as philosophical problem, like for example Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo devoted the later part of his life trying to influence the younger generation to break away from the mindset that has entered into their society, retarding all, from one generation to another. He said that the great creativity that India once was had been devastatingly destroyed at sometime point of time.

It was B.R. Ambedkar that identified the cause of the retardation of the Indian creativity, which is also the source of the retardation of the mindsets of people of other South Asian countries. He saw that purely by way of mental exercises this bondage cannot be broken. What needed to be broken were the social the social linkages which had tied up the minds of the people over centuries. To this he gave and for the understanding of this processes he devoted his time. And his way of understanding was not by reading into the text of the past but into the lives of the ordinary folk of India spread in that vast country.

In the poverty of
India was the evidence that was necessary to look into in order to discover the methods by which people lives are destroyed by this terrible heritage.

Jawaharlal Nehru in the Discovery of India tries to talk about the glories of
India in the past. Ambedkar on the other hand tries to demonstrate how the glory was lost and how the bondage of the Indian minds and the Indian spirit and as a result the Indian way of life was come to what it is today. It is this discovery that has the capacity and the liberating effect that not only the masses but the entire country is in need of in order to face the challenges of the modern times. Human nature is selfish, aggressive, acquisitive, possessive, mean, vindictive

Calcutta Telegraph - April 15 at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture, 3 Regent Park; 10 am: A special cultural programme in memory of Krishna Chattopadhyay.

Sri Aurobindo and The Mother decided to establish God’s Truth at a higher level, viz., in earth’s life, so that suffering, pain, falsehood, cruelty, and poverty in any form would be fully and finally abolished from earth’s life, not merely from human life…
The common man may ask where does he come in this scheme of things and what is the relevance of this yoga to his life. Apart from being an avatar, Mother is a mother to every created being. She comes to us as a mother too. Falsehood is found in several forms. They are poverty, illness, mental pain, human impurity, imperfection, disharmony, etc. If the ordinary man relates to Mother, Her Truth and Power reduce these forms of untruth and finally abolish them. If man, while suffering, prays to Mother for relief and is relieved from any of these deformations, he receives Her Truth and serves her. In other words, man comes to Mother to get his daughter married, his son employed, to restore his lost property, cure his illness, secure promotions and in this way he is serving God’s purpose of establishing Truth on earth forever. This book narrates several such experiences of devotees.
Man acts to fulfil his needs and guides himself by his nature, known as human nature. This is selfish, aggressive, acquisitive, possessive, mean, vindictive, and so many other things that we know of. In his march towards civilisation, man learns to restrain himself and learns not to express these low aspects of human nature. In fact, human nature consists of high potentialities and low actualities. It is the lower side that often presses forward. When man advances further than the early civilised conditions, he seeks culture. He tries to change himself inside and express what he really is in his inner character. At the first stage of civilisation what changes is behaviour. In the second stage of culture it is character that changes. Below that remains the consciousness of Man, untouched and unchanged. Only when this changes from pettiness to nobility, from falsehood to truth, can human life turn into Life Divine.
The Mother’s aim is to found a place where sadhaks can gather to work for this change, which She calls Transformation. It is not given to man to bring about this change in himself. Only the Divine can do so. All that man is called upon to do is to totally surrender himself to the Divine. In practice, this is done by meditation, selfless work and an adoration of the Divine in one’s prayers. The triple key of yoga must be turned in the lock of the spirit.

Comment posted by RY Deshpande Re: RYD’s sly and insidious Method... About Savitri as a Fictional Creation
My remarks or observations against some individuals might appear unsavoury, or might even hurt certain feelings; but the intention will be to be truthful to the noble and upright spirit of Savitri which, surely, the giants like Amal and Nirod will fully understand and approve. Whatever is said is said in the context of Savitri and it will be wrong to draw other conclusions from it. We should also recognize that we’re not Praxitelian statues of perfection in static marble, but humans in living flesh and blood with all the foibles and weaknesses and prejudices and inadequacies and deficiencies, with all the quirks and idiosyncrasies, as much as the noble and the beautiful that is also with us. To ignore the former will be to be unrealistic; to get subdued by the latter will be to abdicate our sense of responsibility. We’ve to see the best and proceed with it, unmindful of action-reaction from different quarters. And of course who will say that he is not putting his best? ~ RYD

Barbara Marx Hubbard -- Founder, Foundation of Conscious Evolution
As a lifelong champion of conscious evolution I see “The Great Shift” as a seminal contribution toward our ability to evolve consciously. The shift of evolution itself from unconscious to conscious choice is to me the signal of the evolution of the species of Homo sapiens sapiens. As Sri Aurobindo put it: “Man is a transitional species.” Transitional toward what is a key question.
Reading “The Great Shift” helps us see that we are in transition to a co-creative, planetary, universal species, the fulfilment of the aspiration of the ages, the hearts’ desire of countless millions. We gain “evolutionary eyes,” and can see ourselves from the “Overview Perspective” as a species emerging toward its birth as a universal humanity.
We can place our own yearning for greater meaning, more creative life, deeper giving of our best into this framework and accept Robin Wood as one of our beloved planetary teachers, guides and friends in this fabulous journey into the unknown.

Many people have a hard time accepting the necessity or if you will, the underlying truth, behind the inconscient, ignorant, dark or apparently unconscious aspects of existence. This is the reason that so many people have either tried to turn it into a pure cosmic illusion, from which to simply try to escape, or else have set up a duality of God and devil, to basically “disown” the world of ignorance.
Sri Aurobindo however points out that we cannot simply disregard the truth that underpins even this aspect of the manifested reality.

The time has come for the application of spirituality in life. What better source is there for this than the writings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother? It is therefore heartening to know that an attempt is being made to bring the thought and consciousness of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother into the daily and mundane activities of life. My best wishes to the Overman [Foundation] for this endeavour.

Moral, intellectual and spiritual perfection of mankind is the aim

To celebrate the centenary of Sri Aurobindo's life in Pondicherry, the children from the theatre group Nishumbita presented a play focusing on the leader, philosopher, transformer and freedom fighter's journey to the seaside and the historic town of Pondicherry. The play
The story of the play started with Aurobindo Ghose’s life in Baroda when he was invited by KG Deshpande to take charge of the weekly paper Induprakash. It was during this time when Sri Aurobindo started engaging in revolutionary activities with Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Jatindra Nath Banerji. After the Bengal partition, he shifted base to Bengal where his activities for purna swaraj continued.
During to his revolutionary writing, he was arrested on the charge of keeping explosives at his home in regards to the Alipore Bomb Case. It was during his stay in the jail that he attained his spiritual power and became a devotee of Lord Krishna. With the help of firebrand lawyer Chitaranjan Das, he was finally acquitted. In 1910, tired of relentless British persecution, Sri Aurobindo retired from politics and moved to Pondicherry.
The play, being a complete children’s play, had active participation from them and projected commendable acting skills. But the highlight of the play was the performers’ familiarity with history and the inspirational message about the life of Sri Aurobindothat was sent to the children sitting in the audience.

I was born into a world without villains. The British had left India. We were a free nation. There were many heroes: Gandhi, Subhash Bose, Sri Aurobindo, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad, Ambedkar. Remarkable guys who fought, each in his own way to bring us freedom. A spanking new nation was about to be built. Everyone was excited. It was heady times; it felt great to be an Indian. All our other identities were subsumed… It wasn’t only Marxism. Politics failed India.
The most urgent task that lies before the Indo-Europeans today is to recover their original spiritual character and reform the degenerate type of democratic government, which has been forced upon them. The natural revulsion to the Marxist democratic ethos is evident both in Indian as well as in European thinkers. I may point, for an example of the spiritual focus of politics, to one of India's earliest nationalists, Aurobindo Ghosh, who, in his essay "Asiatic Democracy", declared that, unlike most western democracies, Indian civilisation seeks "the fulfillment of the highest tendencies of human civilisation and it must include in its sweep the most vital impulses of modern life. It will include democracy and Socialism also, purifying them, raising them above the excessive stress on the economic adjustments which are the means, and teaching them to fix their eyes more constantly and clearly on the moral, intellectual and spiritual perfection of mankind, which is the aim.

Aurobindo identifies the fundamental weakness of modern democracy as being due to the fact that "It took as its motive the rights of man and not the Dharma [natural duty] of humanity; it appealed to the selfishness of the lower classes against the pride of the upper; it made hatred and internecine war the permanent allies of Christian ideals and wrought an inextricable confusion which is the modern malady of Europe."
India's task, however, is to regenerate the modern western concept of democracy in the light of its spiritual intuitions: Her mission is to point back humanity to the true source of human liberty, equality, and human brotherhood. When man is free in spirit, all other freedom is at his command; for the Free is the Lord who cannot be bound. When he is liberated from delusion, he perceives the divine equality of the world which fulfills itself through love and justice, and this perception transfuses itself into the law of government and society ... Dharma is the Indian conception in which rights and duties lose the artificial antagonism created by a view of the world which makes selfishness the root of action, and regain their deep and eternal unity.

The system of caste in ancient
India was indeed a necessary social framework for the cultivation of Hindu Dharma. It was instituted "in order to secure an ordered society in which she could develop her spiritual insight and perfect her civilization". In his essay "Caste and Democracy", Sri Aurobindo distinguishes castes from the European classes, which were a predominantly economic and materialistic division. As he says, The division of castes in India was conceived as a distribution of duties. A man's caste depended on his dharma, his spiritual, moral and practical duties, and his dharma depended on his swabhav, his temperament, and inborn nature ... Caste therefore was … a supreme necessity without which Hindu civilisation could not have developed its distinctive character or worked out its unique mission.

Interestingly, the urge to reform the mechanical conception of democracy as a rule by numbers according to a more authentic Indo-European socio-political ethos was most markedly present in the German conservative writers of the early part of this century, who sought to combat the false economic sociology of the Jewish thinker, Karl Marx. Oswald Spengler, for example, the author of the celebrated cultural history of the Occident, The Decline of the West, points in his essay "Prussianism and Socialism" to the merits of the traditional Prussian system of social organisation as compared to the capitalistic system of party politics and parliamentarianism: The Prussian style of living ... has produced a profound and vigorous rank-consciousness, a feeling of unity based on an ethos of work, not leisure. It unites the members of each professional group - military, civil service, and labour - by infusing them with a pride of vocation and dedicates them to activity that benefits all others, the totality, the state ... The bond of unity at all levels is a supreme ethos of dedication, not of success.

Any large institution that is involved in publishing needs policies that address individual copyright, the ability of its members to write and publish within the subject matter of their jobs and their role within the institution. It is the nature of writing that it may offend some people, or there may be questions about the right of a person to publish certain material. An institution needs to address this directly. In addition, a large institution needs policies and procedures related to communication and public relations. This issue only shows the current weakness. This "controversy" is common knowledge in the Ashram, in Auroville, and across the world, and is bringing a bad name to the Ashram. There should be a person or an office that is empowered to speak to this, that can be the voice of the Ashram as a whole, that can tell residents, locals, and the world what the actions of the institution are, how it is approaching this matter. In the absence of such a voice, it seems that the institution is throwing itself open to arbitrary actions, movements, and outcomes.

Dear Thusar,
Sorry for the delayed reply. I was travelling once again.
Briefly, yes those who are competent in their respective areas should be let to do their work.
I know that there isn't an apex body or a very rigid hierarchy in the SA Ashram since The Mother has left, and therefore it gives room for some people to try to challenge that authority.
I am also sure that faith, transparency and good will will at the end carry us all through. But those followers and devotees who think that they have the right to insult and slander and spread false information, hopefully will realize that everybody doesn't necessarily agree with their methods. Sincerely, Satheesh.

We may say Sri Aurobindo brought new possibilities of experience which he expressed using the open language of his time, stretching it to accommodate what he brought. But with time, the language itself evolves in its capacity to embody new distinctions of experience which need to be reconstellated with the new possibilities introduced by Sri Aurobindo. If this does not happen, the language vehicle created by Sri Aurobindo will cease to be open and reify into a fetish. On the other hand, the open language will leave it behind as belonging to an anterior (Orientalist) structure. As with other contemporary reconsiderations of history, it is a process of reviving through dialog which maintains currency in the evolving body of language. I am not speaking here of rewriting Sri Aurobindo but of reconstellating or recontextualzing him. In continuously negotiating a location within this shifting terrain the relative values will stand evident.

RYD’s sly and insidious Method of sowing Doubts in People’s Minds—by S Satheesh Comment posted by: RY Deshpande

If we go by Satheesh-Tusar’s ham-fisted reasoning, then we must allow to stand, unchallenged, the two ‘slip’-entries listed above, these unquestionably forming a part of literature published and offered by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a preposterous proposition indeed. Add to that also Amal’s Divine prone to human mistakes when he takes a human birth by the ordinary human process!

In the context of editing Savitri, if at all it has to be done in a minimal way, all this would amount to making a mess of the whole thing. The upshot is an obvious distinction, in fact in the present circumstances an important distinction, must be made between the Ashram as an institution and the Ashram as a spiritual centre when the founding Guides are not physically present. ~RYD

The Meaning of It All from One Cosmos by Gagdad Bob

As I have mentioned before, I have some fundamental disagreements with Schuon in several key areas, including the value of science, the meaning of modernity, the actual conditions in which most premodern men lived (e.g., illiteracy, famine, plague, oppression, unpleasant rashes, bad smells, et al), the relative utility of psychoanalysis, his placement of metaphysics over revelation, the providential role of the United States, his idealization of American Indian culture (and "primordial culture" in general, what with its psychotic levels of violence, not to mention human sacrifice), and the contributions of people like Teilhard and Aurobindo, who tried to reconcile evolution and Spirit (not to suggest that I fully agree with those two either).

Why is Sri Aurobindo not in the forefront of the nation's attention today? Some contend that it is in the manner in which we frame the national debate in terms of the ‘secular' and the ‘communal' that the third category, the ‘spiritual' must take a back seat: Sri Aurobindo, after all was a philosopher-mystic.
Is it because, we as a nation, in our collective self image and self expression seem to have opted for ideals and action that run diametrically opposite to the vision of Sri Aurobindo?
Sri Aurobindo declared that the nation is not the sum total of the parts. But our leaders in all spheres seem to maintain that it is the parts, and only the parts, that make up the nation. Indeed, every part that claims to exist by itself in an insular and atomistic manner, can browbeat, terrorise or blackmail other parts, and the whole, into submission.
