The Veda is no more prisoned in rituals and conventions

Remembering Indian Freedom Fighter Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das Death Anniversary on Jun 16, 2011 By Tarit Mukherjee PIB Features Washington Bangla Radio
The turning point in his career came when he was called upon to appear on behalf of Aurobindo Ghose in the Alipore Bomb Case (1908). It was due to his brilliant handling of the case thatAurobindo was ultimately acquitted. This case brought Das to the ...
Sri Aurobindo breaks new ground in interpreting the ancient Vedas. ... Sri Aurobindo was able to uncover the mystery of the double meanings, the inner ...
This epoch-making work of Sri Aurobindo on Vedic mysticism is of immense import as far as hermeneutics and psychology are considerd. It is the most original contribution of Sri Aurobindo to the modern knowledge systems. To the reader of this work, Indra is no longer a mere mythological deity, but the master of his own 'indriyas', senses, with whose active help, it would be easy to win new frontiers of awareness. Varuna is not simply the lord of the sea but the highest psychological state of oceanic vastness, light and purity into which we all must aspire to surge forth. By this simple exercise of replacing the connotations, one turns with profit the Vedic text of great antiquity into an excellenct self-management treatise. The Veda is no more prisoned in rituals and conventions but becomes a handbook of self-culture.
As a result, thematic unity between the Veda and the Upanishads has been restored. By addressing the most primordial existential issues besetting human life, the Veda is a univesal testament, and Sri Aurobindo has delivered it from the confines of a particular religion. Permalink
The part II deals with the Word, which is the agency from which creation actually proceeds. It has 2 suktas including the Vak Sukta. The topic of creation cannot be separated from the topic of destruction. The Brhadaranyaka mantra on creation mentions the maxim, 'Hunger that is death'. The famous phrase is from the Taittiriya Upanishad, 'Eater is eaten' (adyena atti, Tai. U. 2.3) indicates the intimate connection.
Part III deals with Death viewed in the broad sense of the word. Part III is entitled, 'Veda, Rites and Yama'. Chapter 14 gives an overview of some popular rites (samskaras) performed at various stages of life. Chapter 15 focuses only on the final rites along with the associated mantras; some relevant mantras are also in Chapter 17. Because of sheer laziness and ignorance, many Hindus ascribe several irrational beliefs on the topic of death and Yama to Veda. Chapter 14 indicates the beliefs which can be traced to Vedas and those which have no place in the Vedas. Chapter 18 gives an excellent description of the Heaven which has none of the earthly enjoyments. Chapter 19 deals with the topic of return to earth from the home of Death. Letters To The Editor
the statesman
The Sister is known to have assisted Sri Aurobindo and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose. She had walked down Bosepara Lane to the Beadon Street residence of Sri Aurobindo at midnight to help him leave for Chandannagar and thereby evade arrest by the police of British India. The Bose Institute owes not a little to the Sister, a contribution that the eminent scientist acknowledged in full measure.
Sister Nibedita’s 100-year-old house is now dilapidated. It should be taken over by the government or KMC and declared a heritage building, complete with a museum. If the government is short of money, the citizens can help raise the funds. Perhaps The Statesman can help by inviting donations. She was an occasional contributor to the paper. Yours, etc., Pranabananda Sen, Kolkata, 7 June.

Follow up (of General Meeting from Wednesday 1st of June, follow up from 25th of May, 18th April...) on Tuesday 7th of June at SAWCHU was a clear expression from all participants that this is the time for action, because the mandate of Working Committee and Auroville Council is about to end on 22nd of June. For that reason the election process for new members of both should start, as well the new members of Resident Assembly Service should be elected, since its function is to facilitate meetings, and held communication between Working Committee, Auroville Council and residents. Read more

Dante, a poet for all seasons New Statesman - A N Wilson Published 09 June 2011 Those who have yet to read the Divine Comedy are missing out on one of life's great aesthetic and intellectual experiences.
Yet Dante was the greatest poet of the Middle Ages. It could be argued that he was the greatest of all European poets, of any time or place. But while most non-Italian readers are prepared to take this on trust, they sidestep his work, making him one of the great unreads. In so doing, they leave unsavoured one of the greatest aesthetic, imaginative, emotional and intellectual experiences on offer.
They are like those who have never attended a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni, or of Shakespeare's Lear; who have never heard a symphony by Beethoven or visited Paris. Quite simply, they are missing out. S.Ghosh on Nov-12:
On July 23, 1923, Sri Aurobindo said, "Purification can come by the transformation of the impulse of violence. In that respect the old system in India was much better: the man who had the fighting spirit became the Kshatriya and then the fighting spirit was raised above the ordinary vital influence. The attempt was to spiritualize it. It succeeded in doing what passive resistance cannot and will not achieve. The Kshatriya was the man who would not allow any oppression, who would fight it out and he was the man who would not oppress anybody. That was the ideal. Gandhi"s position is that he does not care to remove violence from others; he wants to observe non-violence himself."
Not in the Mahatma's name Indian Express - Tridip Suhrud: Thu Jun 09 2011 A day before the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Tagore warned Gandhi and through him the nation: “Power in all its forms is irrational.” …
If there was anyone in the country who was aware and alive to the deep moral significance of Gandhi’s presence, it was Tagore, and despite this he remained suspicious and ambivalent towards the practice of mass politics. He, like Gandhi, was aware that Satyagraha was not and can never be a mere technique, an instrumentality.
