Heehs traces “the beginning of the Aurobindo legend” to an article by Jitendra Lal Bannerji in 1909. This has nothing to do with devotees, much less with the Mother, and there is no suggestion that Sri Aurobindo “passively supported” it. Heehs notes that Sri Aurobindo himself “does not seem to have been taken Jitendra Lal’s article too seriously” and “published a letter... that scoffed at Jitendra Lal’s hero-worshipping tone.” (Lives, p. 199)
