Had Bharati and Iyer caught a glimpse of the unfailing and unseen hand of destiny taking charge of their life they would not have left Pondicherry in haste… While Sri Aurobindo responded to the call of the Divine without fail the other two failed. It is our misfortune that they failed to respond. Otherwise their contribution towards enrichment of our life, literature and culture would have come up on par with that of Sri Aurobindo.  R VENKATESH

Let us not forget that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother gave their photographs to disciples for their spiritual help. Sri Aurobindo’s photograph was displayed in the Reception Room even in the thirties. It is in fact this photograph that Debashish is referring to, in front of which the sadhak was told not to put flowers. This should be understood in the sense that there should not be too much decoration around it to attract unnecessary public attention and not in the sense that the offering of flowers itself was considered as an unwanted religious ritual. The same kind of instructions were given by the Mother with regard to Sri Aurobindo’s Samadhi. Flowers on it were changed every day and a minimum of incense sticks lit, but coconut breaking was firmly disallowed. There is always a balance which the Mother struck between the external act and the inner spirit, which has actually been misinterpreted by both religious and anti-religious groups.

Dialogues with a Modern Mystic – Andrew Harvey & Mark Matousek ... By evolutionarymystic
Part Two addresses the complexities of the mystical path. Eastern and Western traditions seem very different on the surface, but on deeper reflection, there are core values and experiences that transcend dogma.
Harvey calls for a re-integration of the divine feminine into spiritual practices. He cites the ecstasy of mystics such as Ramakrishna, Rumi, Ramana Maharshi, Bede Griffiths, St John of the Cross, and Sri Aurobindo (among many) to re-inforce the necessity of surrender in love to ‘Mother’. It was moving to read of the author’s own mystical experiences as he approached and accepted the love of the divine feminine in his own journey.

On a positive note I visited Sadhana Forest, an Auroville community practicing indigenous reforestation and sustainable living. A truly amazing place where volunteers live and work together to work on the land. My spirits were lifted when I saw the composting tubs, the recycling facilities, their fabulous handwashing contraption, the compost toilets, their urine fertilizer, the natural shampoos, soaps etc. Solar panels, homegrown veggies, the list goes on and on…
Sadhana Forest is providing a great opportunity for people to gain and share skills, live in a truly environmentally friendly way and to meet other people that really appreciate the planet that we live on. You get out what you put in. This wonderful, friendly place has a lot to offer and is to be commended on its work. See  for more details.

The Mother did not put a lot of attention on Auroville because she had lost hope on the Ashramites, though it is true that many of them could not rise up to her expectations. For that matter, Mother was also critical of Aurovillians in the early seventies. It only means that most of us are full of defects, that’s all. Debashish is trying to pit Auroville against the Ashram, which is plain divisive politics. The truth is that both are creations of the Mother (with Sri Aurobindo’s force behind it) and both have their respective roles to play.
Raman Reddy said... Anonymous comment: Dear Debashish-ji,
PH would have benefited more had he authored his autobiography My Lives (title suggested) free from any archival support or controversy instead of touching upon Sri Aurobindo’s Lives, and your pain for his ostracism would not have been there. All would have then appreciated his honest self-expression in the autobiography. But he chose to write on Sri Aurobindo in the most unyogic manner and deceive the general public. Object-Oriented Orientalism by SKHOLIAST THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2010
As for "Indian," classical sources list various schools that are strongly divergent in premises, arguments, and conclusions. This divergence continues well into modern times (just compare Aurobindo with, say, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak), and one has to back up quite far before these differences blur into a generic "subcontinental" philosophy.

excellent comparison. i had never thought of Chinese philosophy coming close to SR. I myself have had issues with coming to terms with Harman’s notion of OOO and the dismissing of anthropocentrism and many Indian thinkers i have had the chance to discuss the nullifying of human-centeredness have directed me close to Buddhist thought, wherein at one level, the being and what is being thought become one. I also found some interesting linkages between SR and Aurobindo’s thought. But the real problem lies in ‘correlationism’ and is it ever possible to exorcise the ghost of it. One thing is for sure that Indian thought is getting more and more human-centric and there I think your analogy of moving away from Indian Philosophy and ever closer to Chinese philosophy as what the SR is doing sounds interesting.
Thanks for an intriguing post, Himanshu, and welcome to the blog! Can you say a bit more about the last point? I’m not sure how the “withdrawal” language is working, or what Harman does to take individual objects as foundations comparable to the Cartesian self.
Also, where do you see links between SR and Aurobindo? Is this something you’ve written about on your blog?

SCIENCE, MIND AND YOGA Written by Varun   Thursday, 25 February 2010
On the 17th of February there was a presentation by Binu Mukherjee, an eminent scientist and a professor, which many people attended. The presentation was about his experiences of being a scientist and a spiritual person at the same time. He discussed how, unlike common feeling, his spiritual attitude complimented with the scientific view of the world. The discussion made its way into thoughts such as how application of mind on science and logic helps on finding the limitations of mind in understanding the nature. Spirituality can lead science to areas that could help life become better by making the world more safe and beautiful to live in. He stated, that since science and spirituality are in essence search for the truth they are similar and can be at some point unified.
