In this teaching all that is best in Western humanism and Eastern illumination have come together in marriage. To those who set out upon its adventure it demands, likewise, a new combination of qualities. In Sri Aurobindo’s own words: “They will adopt in its heart of meaning the inward view of the East which bids man seek the secret of his destiny and salvation within; but also they will accept, though with a different turn given to it, the importance which the West rightly attaches to life and to the making the best we know and can attain the general life.”
Secretary, Auroville Foundation, welcomed @PIBBhubaneswar media delegation & conveyed her best wishes for their visit which will provide an opportunity to gain meaningful insights into Auroville’s vision, sustainability, environmental conservation, renewable energy & Green Belt.

When does the State begin becoming a master? Sri Aurobindo warned against treating the State as an end in itself. For him, the individual was never just a unit in a system, but a human being with an inner life and a path of growth. @Sampadananda @RishihoodUni This short visual exploration, based on 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞, looks at the relationship between the individual, the State and humanity—and asks where the State’s control should end. What kind of society truly allows the individual to grow?

I don’t want to create an “American Hinduism.” I want to dispense with the notion of “Hinduism” and the artificial unity it implies altogether so Hindus outside of India can explore their spiritual heritage unfettered by ossified and distant ritual and cultural norms. I’m not assuming that at all. This is a misreading on your part. This is a particular phenomena in the diaspora precisely because we’re extricated from the Hindu ecosystem in India that facilitates organic evolution and adaptation

What does it mean to "follow Hinduism"? In theory, you are correct that transforming a set of variegated traditions bound to particular caste groups into something approximating a "religion" would be a progressive development, but this is not what happened. Instead, we got the conceptual facade of a "religion" hastily painted over a largely unchanged edifice.
You're correct that Neo-Vedanta formed the philosophical foundation of "Hinduism," but practically speaking this has devolved into a sort of nihilism. Because the underlying structure largely remained unchanged, the philosophical ideal has survived in a degenerated form as a cliched "inclusivism" (e.g., "all paths lead to the same truth"). In reality this has become a lazy excuse to avoid structural transformation to ritual praxis, which is largely preserved as ossified cultural practices with little to no spiritual significance.
Because it imposes a cognitive straitjacket on the individual’s conception of a reconstructed Hindu tradition could look like in novel social and cultural environments. “Hinduism” reifies a particular configuration of ritual and culture as essential, and doesn’t provide the tools to navigate questions of adaptation . I discuss this in detail in my essay “the Hindu Case Against ‘Hinduism’”

Please check Savitri Era Religion (2006) and Savitri Era Party (2007) inspired by The Mother & Sri Aurobindo which are viable alternatives. Challenges of the future are identical in India, America, and elsewhere in the world. The Human Cycle by Sri Aurobindo is a clear blueprint.

Emily Wilson has already critiqued Christopher Nolan's Odyssey for being shallow, and philosopher of ethics Kathryn Lawson goes further. Lawson argues that giving Odysseus a conscience was a dangerous mistake on Nolan's part, and draws on philosophers of Homer, Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Levinas, and Simone Weil, to demonstrate this. Homer's Odysseus feels no guilt for his violence, and that absence of guilt serves as a warning.
But replacing that with a guilt-ridden hero means Nolan strips the story of its ethical depth and leaves us with the comforting fantasy that the powerful will change once they understand what they've done. Tap the link now to read Lawson's full article. iai.tv/articles/nolan…

The West built the other structure: the navigator’s mind. The man alone on the sea or the mountain, who cannot vote on the weather, cannot appeal the rocks to a committee – who must reason, by himself, from evidence to decision, and live with the verdict. Men of the sea and the mountain, rather than social beings of the plains. The Odyssey is that mind’s first monument; the scientific method is its constitution.

The papacy lasted a millennium because it was a structure, not a person – it survived bad popes, mad popes, captive popes. What we have now is the function without the institution: a single mortal, a single account, a single platform. This works exactly as long as he does.

The papacy did not begin with power. It began with a claim about what was true, and the nerve to keep making it in public for centuries. Authority is not granted – it accumulates around whoever will say what everything is for, and keeps being right long enough that ignoring them becomes expensive.

Meaning has to be shareable. If you think of it as a personal, private possession of your preferences, then it's not meaningful…it's not meaning. A clear, really well done model of somebody who lives in a consistently nihilistic fashion and really understands that meaning has to be shared and he's not therefore sharing meaning because he's a nihilist:
Dostoevsky's Notes from the Underground is the perfect portrayal of that. The Underground Man shows you what happens when you try to avoid all these performative contradictions in nihilism...:
• about you still valuing your agency, but why should you value it?
• and meaning has to be shareable, but I can't possibly share with other people because it's just all about me
…and you get the Underground Man.
And my best way of relating that is when my son read the book and he came to me: I don't like the Underground Man. That's what Dostoevsky wants you to realize…he's tired of the empty word-salad arguments because they stay at the level of propositions and thus thwart us from realizing performative contradictions.
Dostoevsky says, forget all the propositional argument and let's give you somebody who is being "authentic" in that they are trying to live without those performative contradictions. So don't let yourself be distracted and diverted by mere propositional circulation. Obviously, propositional arguments matter…but propositional arguments have to be open to the realization, the acknowledgment and appreciation, the apprehension of performative contradiction. And then the person has to make an existential choice:
Do I reject the performative contradiction and then fall into the Underground Man…or do I accept it and realize that a change is required?
That's, to my mind, what the Kyoto school taught me...
