>>Gangadharan-working in the Sanitary Service!>> It is not that one is doing "invaluable" work only in the Archives! Every work is an “invaluable” work if it is a part of spiritual growth, spiritual progress. That work can be anywhere, at the Samadhi, in the School, in the Dining Room, Construction, Hair Cutting, Laundry, Gardening, or looking after the patients in the Nursing Home, rolling Agarabattis, or in the Gymnasium, or writing Poetry, or Music or Dance, ... In a spiritual institution the value of the work lies in its being an aspect of Yoga. The rest is mundane, and official with false prestige. It is therefore fallacious to recommend someone for something if that someone is in the Archives, saying that he is doing "invaluable" work. ~ RYD

In interesting interview with Andrea we overview last five years from its early beginnings to today, and what actually Auroville Radio is to the community, and what it is to the other world. Speaking without notes, Ranade said that “Each one having his own way to find awakening does not find the manifestation of the divinity in every form and every thing.”
But its okay, he said. “We recognize our limitations. The Eastern religions specialized in an other-worldly spirituality. The Western ones specialized in a real-life mastery. They both contained a grain of truth. We need a realization of divine materialism. Mastery is not to be found in the sense of dominion but of identity... Vizag or Pondy on departure? - India Travel Forum IndiaMike.com By displaceddesi Don't know India well enough to give you any useful advice but I did go to Aurobindo. The place puzzled me, it seemed to be the Westerners idea of what an ashram should be, recreating the Californian hippy preconception of peace & tranqility. We had to form orderly queues for everything, no talking or laughing, in fact dour, completely humourless & lacking in soul. After the chaos of Tirupati it was a stark, uncomfortable experience. I do realise they do a lot of good for the local community but, it it India?

Smelling India (and then some): delhi continued By Galen We are staying at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where we stayed when we first arrived in Delhi. Sri Aurobindo describes precisely the state of Indian Education

stingle: The Bad Believer By Riya - Since a lot of Sri Ramkrishna's teachings revolved around the sameness of spiritual message among all religions, we as children got adequately exposed to the basic principles of all faiths. Add to this, my schooling at The Mother's International School, affiliated to the Aurobindo Ashram, and what you get is a heady mix of extremely tolerant, very high thinking, complex philosophical new age spirituality. I grew up assuming that was 'religion'. It was only later that I understood that my perspective of god was not from a religious point of view at all.

Welcome to the Statesman
Beyond books Studies~ no, not that boring term again but it turned into a fun session when the students of The Future Foundation School and Arun Nursery presented a 'Learning Pageant' for this year. It is an approach by the school to help the learners improve their reasoning power and know the unknown. The chief guest for this event was Dr. Saugat Mukherjee, regional director, eastern region, Confederation of Indian Industries while the guest of honour was handed over to Sunita Sen, the Principal of Ballygunj Shiksha Sadan. They encouraged the students on becoming the liable citizens of the future as they shared their path towards prominence with the budding aspirants.

Inspired by Sri Aurobindo, the school looks forward to build up a student's mentality for the world outside and allow them to develop a wider prospect towards life. This year the event was a little different as it aimed at breaking the barrier of studies. Bihan Sengupta, Class XII Future Foundation School.

A Review by Manoj Pavitran What is Great? The most outstanding feature of the book that beats all other biographies that have been written so far is the sheer mass of research data that has made even the bibliography a book by itself. This is where the author excels and this is where we see his labour of love for Sri Aurobindo, who is the very subject of his investigation. No one can persist with such thoroughness for nearly three decades, collecting a huge amount of empirical data from all over the world, without a deep love for the subject. Here is a true researcher excelling in his craft, a lover who persists tirelessly. Any one who wants to investigate Sri Aurobindo’s life in the future will find this an immense treasure. This is the empirical domain, the verifiable data and Peter has done a great job, hats off! .

We have been devotees of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo for four generations and we try, as far as possible to go by their teachings. I, on my part have a long, long way to go. Maybe this lifetime will not be enough for me to be a true devotee. The pull of external world becomes too much to resist. I am happy to be in this community

But I also have a mission. There are people dwelling in indifferent levels of consciousness, and our effort is to point them, however modestly, to the path of self discovery. At least they have taken a turn, in the right direction. I feel we have to still talk to them in the language they understand, or are beginning to understand. That's what we are trying to do in our website Copperstrings. I don't know if this will be considered spamming. Grateful to hear your views. ► Reply to This

Mahalakshmi: The aspect of the Mother we all turn to with joy and longing
Published on: May 10, 2009 by Abhijit Banerjee Last updated on: Aug 21, 2009
The Divine Mother plays a prominent role in Eastern religions, especially Hinduism. In his essay, The Mother, Sri Aurobindo says “the Mother is one but she comes before us with differing aspects.” There are four major aspects of the Mother Divine. Maheshwari, Mahakali, Mahasaraswati, and Mahalakshmi. These different aspects of the transcendental Mother have different qualities and perform different functions. In this journal I reproduce the section on the power of Mahalakshmi as "there is no aspect of the Divine Shakti more attractive to the heart of the embodied beings. Maheshwari can appear too calm and great and distant for the littleness of earthly nature to approach or contain her, Mahakali too swift and formidabl... more>

One relationship is dominating world consciousness today. Our relationship with money. And a whole lot of us are facing the prospect of a break-up in this relationship. Is there an inherent flaw in the relationship which we are not able to see? “The seekers or keepers of wealth are more often possessed rather than its possessors,” Sri Aurobindo wrote in ‘The Mother.’ In a section on money he points out what should be our true relation with this universal force called money: “All wealth belongs to the Divine and those who hold it are trustees, not possessors. It is with them today, tomorrow it may be elsewhere.” While we seek countless methods to solve the current economic crisis, I thought it relevant to take a look at ... more> Comment(s) : 2

Jaipur blast : 'There are Hands that save'

I was reading Sri Aurobindo's Savitri- the epic poem running some 9000 lines over almost 875 pages. This magnum opus can hardly be fathomed or completely read through in the life time of ordinary mortal like me. However, I literally stumbled over this page today and read what the Sage had seen in his seer vision (ref: Jaipur blast). I quote a few lines from those pages: Quote from Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri, Book Seven, Canto Two, P.481-482 Man’s lower nature hides theseawful guests, Their vast contagion gripssometimes man’s world, An awful insurgence overpowersman’s soul. In house and house this uprising grows; Hell’s companies are loosed todo this work, Into the earth- ways they break-out fromal... more>

For those of you who have joined Copperstrings recently, and even those not so recently, I thought it might be useful to recycle some of the interesting journals which have been written earlier in the year. All these journals were well appreciated and extensively read and are still being read. Many topics are timeless, and can be discussed again and again. I am bringing these journals back to the spotlight so that newcomers and others who may have missed them, have a chance to read and share their experiences. more>
