PUDUCHERRY: Following last weekend's music festival, the Department of Tourism, the Department of Art and Culture and The Aurobindo Ashram will conduct a slew of events to mark the centenary of Sri Aurobindo's arrival in Puducherry.
It was on April 4, 1910 , that Sri Aurobindo arrived at Puducherry. On the same day this year, music teachers and students of Sri Aurobindo Centre of Education will offer “Century's salutations to Sri Aurobindo,” a composition of Sanskrit hymns by Shobha Mitra, at 6 a.m. near Le Café on Beach Road
A public function will be held at the old port at 6.30 p.m. , in which film music director Gangai Amaran will perform. Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture V. Narayanasamy, Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam and other ministers are expected to participate. Booklets, CDs and special postal covers will also be released on the occasion. This will be followed by a massive fireworks display on Beach Road 8 p.m.
A heritage walk which will trace all the houses Sri Aurobindo lived in Puducherry, will be held on Friday. The walk will begin at 5 p.m. from Rue Saint Gilles behind the Ashram.
The Coimbatore Centre of Sri Aurobindo Society will celebrate the Centenary of Sri Aurobindo's arrival in Puducherry on April 4. There will be a special meditation.

Telling tales Times of India Mar 31, 2010 Writing a historical account is a relatively easy task. But what about making a novel out of it? Author Arup Mitra, who was recently in the city to launch his book Uttara Yogi, says that writing a historical novel is both interesting and exciting.
“In 1870, Swami Vasudeva of the Nagai Japat community made a momentous prediction. He said that the Uttara Yogi (a yogi from the north) would settle in south India April 4, 1910 , Aurobindo Ghose settled in Pondicherry
“But my book is not a biography of the life of Aurobindo. It’s a story of how Swami Vasudeva’s prediction came true. It’s a dramatic account of his life,” he adds.
So, what inspired him to pen this novel? “My interest in Aurobindo led me to write a novel on his life. No one has attempted to sketch his life and I thought if I wrote a novel on his life, instead of a biography, I could get readers of all age groups to take interest in his philosophy. This book takes the readers back to the pre-independence era and explains what patriotism, adventure, love and betrayal are. It’s a perfect read for the layman,” he says.

Ask him if penning a historical novel was a difficult job and he replies, “Au contraire (on the contrary), it’s quite an easy job to write novels on gurus and ancient people because very little is known about them. An author can take the creative liberty of imagining certain sections of their lives. But writing a novel on people from recent times is a laborious task. Their lives are well chronicled and it will be inappropriate for writers to let their imagination run wild.”
