Proto Indo European PIE per modern theories was the original language that split into various PIE families of languages. Vedic Sanskrit the oldest preserved language of this family maintained pristine for thousands of years. Sri Aurobindo has shown that all PIE share root sounds.
Sri Aurobindo maintained that Sanskrit came from Dev Bhasha देव भाषा। This Dev Bhasha originated from higher states of consciousness and underwent degradation in the Vedic cycles. The great Rishis constantly attempted to return it to the original purity which is called Sanskrit.

This reminds me of one of Paul Tillich's three ontological polarities — individuation and participation. Constantly in tension and interplay. The other two are Form-and-Dynamics, and Freedom-and-Destiny.
