Correct. Transactional relationships with devi devatas instead of spiritual one is the bane of true worship. Crudest form is Hindus visiting mazars.
Quite shallow statement ji.
Various dévatā are invoked for certain purposes. They are given offering & asked to do certain tasks. Once the demand (in form of prayer) is made, dévatā is asked to go back (visarjana).
Surprised you missed this common and basic fact.
Have you ever done any Pooja? There is a specific mantra where we give money to the invited dévatā!
Most of the prayers are transactional!
Most people donating hair in Tirupati are transactional (they are paying in form of their hair/their abhimāna about their physical looks)!
Lastly, the highest vrata for a woman is sati-dharma (being utmost devoted to one’s husband).
Highest vrata for a man is being brahmachāri (not limited about sexual scope of the word - brahmacharya is state of mind).
A man doing all nityakarma for family while being established in brahmacharya and his wife being established in sati-dharma: when this happens, the man becomes Atri and Woman becomes Anasūyā.
Beings like durvāsa and dattātraya are born to such couples.

Thanks. Most hindus follow people who do transactional business. That's how we have mandir of Sai and scores going to mazaars.
Long thread: The latest brouhaha about Sadhguru- Mahashivaratri sparked a broader thought - on universal versus specific and how that’s a false binary when it comes to Hindu Dharma and hence distancing from Hinduism isn’t the right approach for universalisation (1/n)
Replying to
S.N. Balagangadhara had an astute analysis of the two ways in which Christian ideas spread - evangelisation, and “secularisation”. Secularisation being the process by which Christian ideas shed their outward Christian visage but get projected as universally applicable ideas (2/n)
That provokes a q - hey can’t Hinduism also “secularise” - remove the Hindu “baggage” and hence increase appeal ostensibly to a wider set of people. This is the line of thinking that leads to “Yoga/ Pranayama/ Bhagavad Gita” are not Hindu/ religious etc. (3/n)
In Hinduism the universal manifests in the specific. Yatha Pinde Tatha Brahmande. Seeing the specific as a barrier rather than as a fractal or path or foundation is wrong. The specific is NEVER a barrier, it gives flesh and detail to the divine and helps us access it (5/n)
Plus the divine is present in everything. We cannot distil out the divine from any ritual praxis. The divine inspired it, and that’s why such praxis acts as a route to access the divine. Shivaratri, Yoga, Pranayama without Hinduism, is Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark (6/n)
I don’t think Sadhguru ever shies away from saying he is a Hindu and he is teaching Hindu thought, prayers and practices. Disclaimer: I have never met Sadhguru, I have never been to his ashram. I have nothing to do with Isha foundation whatsoever.
Replying to
He never says he is Hindu or his Isha Foundation is a Hindu organization. In fact he calls it a non religious organization
With every passing day my belief in Indian people's alleged spirituality depletes at a rapid pace. Long back I thought that a vague spiritual principle was guiding lives of Indians. That romance has been shattered. I hoped against hope for long but I seen no evidence anywhere.
Today, the AIT camp is a happy valley protected from the rising waters of counter-evidence.
But waters keep rising, and the time can't be far off when the waters will overcome the dam and drastically impact the cosy life in the valley.

The texts and philosophers discussed range from Nietzsche and Sartre to P.D. James and the Bhagavad Gita. The Bloomsbury Revelations edition includes a new preface from the author.
Mary Midgley argues in her powerful book that far from being the opposite of science, myth is a central part of it. In brilliant prose claims that myths are neither lies nor mere stories but a network of powerful symbols that suggest particular ways of interpreting the world.
Mary Midgley tackles a question at the root of our civilisation: What is knowledge for? Midgley rejects the fragmentary and specialized way in which information is conveyed in the high-tech world, and criticizes conceptions of philosophy that support this mode of thinking.
Why do the big philosophical questions so often strike us as far-fetched and little to with everyday life? Mary Midgley shows that it need not be that way; she shows that there is a need for philosophy in the real world.
Mary Midgley argues powerfully and persuasively that the rich variety of our imaginative life cannot be contained in the narrow bounds of a highly puritanical materialism that simply equates brain and self.

As someone who has taught himself about philosophy, reading Mary Midgley's Science and Poetry was formative. Also happened to be a friend of Anscombe.
Do you remember a time you read something that really packed a punch, changing the way you think? For me, one time I remember was when my Jesuit friend Richard Roach gave me a copy of Elizabeth Anscombe’s “Mr. Truman’s Degree”, on the immorality of nuclear weapons.

The true crisis in our society is the vast majority of adults cannot emotionally regulate. If we understand how much this impacts our world, it would be a focus of culture.

Today is The Mother's birthday. Arguably, the most important day for Savitri Era Religion. Sri Aurobindo's birthday on August 15 gets diffused due to Independence Day. But today, it's focussed. Also marks a change of season in the North. No more woollens, sort of a New Year's Day.
