Savitri Era Learning Forum (SELF) was started in 2005

Links on Integral Philosophy and spirituality
Aurobindonian: Orthodox Aurobindonian - Sri Aurobindo and the Mother
More on Sri Aurobindo and the Mother Blogs from within the Integral Yoga community
There don't seem to that many Aurobindonian bloggers around. A few are listed here.

Mirror of Tomorrow - blog by long time Aurobindo ashramite RY Deshpande, with discussion.

Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo & The Mother - useful blog with lots of original quotations, discusses the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo & The Mother.

Savitri Era Learning Forum - Savitri Era of those who adore, Om Sri Aurobindo & The Mother. - Family of blogs by Tusar N Mohapatra. I won't give all of them, there are two many, but if you go to the first one, Savitri Era Learning Forum (or SELF for short), which was started in 2005, you can follow the links to the others. Posts a huge amount of material, often totally unsorted, of anything that appears on the Web that is in any way related to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, usually with editrorial comment in the headings only. Adopts a religious devotee approach.

Barindranath Chaki's Blog - prolific blogger, essays on Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, very much devotional / inspirational. See also All choice, Barin Chaki - blogspot. Also there is Aspiration - community forum started by Barin, unlike most generic New Age/Spiritual forums it has a strong Aurobindoanian emphasis, at least when I last checked (in this Barin is more successful that I was; I found it very difficult to get much interest in Integral Transformation happening when I was running the Esotericism and Spirituality forum)

Science, Culture and Integral Yoga (SCIY) - Aurobindonian multi-authored blog and webzine based on the coming together of the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and intellectual/postmodernist social commentary in approach. Founded by Rich Carlson, it is one of the few examples of Aurobindonians engaging with secular modernity, although some would say it is too secular. Totally unlike all the other (devotional or religious) blogs listed here. Yet I cannot but feel that in losing the religion, the fire of intensity is lost as well in thr blandness of modernity. The ideal then (which I haven't seen much of in SCIY) is to combine the best of both, while avoiding the limitations of each.

Much as I am uncomfortable with the intellectual limitations of the religious element (and such limitations need to be challenged and critiqued), I cannot fault the deviotional approach. This is the original, esoteric, Integral Tradition. As far as I am concerned, this is the true Integral Approach, and all the others are pretenders. Yet it is also respected in the exoteric, non-gnostic, materialistic-postmodernist-inspired Integral community.

Because Wilber speaks very highly of Sri Aurobindo (even if his understanding of him is only partial), that means that Aurobindonian ideas have been able to trickle through to even Orthodox Wilberian Integral theory (a bit like how Aristotle was able to enter Christianity via Aquinus perhaps) Kheper Home contact me page by M.Alan Kazlev. page uploaded 1 Aug 2009 (material from old Integral index page dated 25 June 2004 to 26 July 2009), last modified 26 October 2009

Brief introduction to 'The Life Divine’ by Prashant Khanna

Jaya Jaya Mahabharatham by Dr. Prema Nandakumar
A century ago, Sri Aurobindo had noted the social relevance of the Mahabharata for our own times... Sri Aurobindo proved that it was a total mistake to think of the Indians as given solely to contemplation, a myth which is often used to explain away the poverty and non-development which keeps India down... But, as Sri Aurobindo points out, even earlier, in the Udyoga Parva, ... As I took up Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri for my doctoral subject in 1957, the ties with Mahabharata became stronger. Vande Mataram! Aspiration Posted by Gopal on November 8, 2009 at 11:30pm View Gopal's blog
By this time there must have been numbers of blogs written on the fatwa issued by one Islamic organization in India, expressing the anger, disagreement, discontent over the fatwa. This present article is certainly not an effort to be one among them. This is also not just another attempt to condemn the Islamic community for their different views.

Being a devotee of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo, I have learned by this time that I should not separate any section of Life, be it a stone or a person, or a community. This is rather a humble effort by me to present the Spirit, the Mantra of Vande Mataram has embodied in it, as Sri Bankim Chandra received it from those higher spheres, and as Sri Aurobindo presented it to the whole world, in clear words which can even be understood by a common man, not just in those times of freedom struggle, even today. [...]

When muslims are showing fanaticism over Vande Mataram, which is certainly unnecessary, if we too copy them, then it is a “self” defeat. Not the defeat of the egoistic self of ours, but the larger “Self” of ours, The Mother, whom we adore with Vande Mataram. Always the Divine is opposed by the hostile forces. That is the very method of the hostile forces and the lower nature. As in Yoga the choice is ours, either be a captive of the hostile forces, or the free warrior of The Supreme, here too we must follow the same. After all, All Life is Yoga!

It is very natural that one who has known the Vande Mataram, and the inspiration it generated, and freedom it bestowed us, gets angry and agitated over this issue of fatwa. And it is even very natural that he spreads this message of anger and agitation throughout the community. So the result is more agitation and anger in the society, rather than the Force of Vande Mataram acting through people to bring in harmony and victory as it did and for which it is meant. It is again an act of hostility and lower nature, if we continue to spread the anger and agitation.Instead, we must again link ourselves to The Supreme Divine Mother, through Vande Mataram, to Her Transcendent Force, be one with it, embody it, and spread it. [...]

Therefore, I urge to stop spreading the anger and agitation and embody the Power of Vande Matarm. Be the instruments of The Divine Mother, and work for Her, instead of being in the captivity of hostile forces, and work for Her, through Vande Mataram. Dedicated to Her Feet, Gopal B Athani 7th November 2009 Tags: fatwa, sri aurobindo, the mother, vande mataram

Actually Upanishads were esoteric by definition, the word itself implies to sit down at the feet of a teacher : "shad" means to appease, sit, "up" means near and "ni" for a movement downwards. The student had to have enough peace of mind, aspiration and receptivity, and the teacher had to possess both Vedic knowledge and spiritual realization. It was conveyed through oral transmission. Sri Aurobindo did not study them this way but directly from the texts, and IMO his commentaries are pearls of wisdom. Moreover upanishads are pieces of great poetry. Philippe* Moreover Sri Aurobindo did not have a good opinion of Theosophy.

Esoteric and mystic is what Aurobindo makes it for his christianity-groomed western orientalist audience aupmanyav*

Alok Pandey sends me the following comment: One can clearly see the pattern, the same force that worked strongly to mislead by misrepresenting her words through a misplaced emphasis (the Agenda) and created confusion and division is once again trying to do the same. The basic method is the same. Only the details are different. It is obviously most cunning to use their words to nullify their work. But it too will meet its nemesis. You can't play with Sri Aurobindo and his works or play the fool with Divine. The karma catches upon you sometime or the other and then it hits—sometimes hits very hard—forcing you to see despite yourself.

Over 250 varieties of flowers procured locally, also from Bangalore and Kodaikanal were on display at the flowers exhibition held under the title ‘flowers and their spiritual significance.’ According to the organisers, Mother always used to say that about 950 varieties of flowers had spiritual significance, and hence the special exhibition of flowers to mark the anniversary.

The expo was also meant to provide an opportunity to the local people to have a feel of the various varieties of rare flowers.
The rare collections of books by The Mother and Aurobindo were the cynosure of all eyes at the book exhibition, along with various titles on the life and achievements of both the spiritual leaders. The photo exhibition had rare and interesting pictures of both of them since their childhood.

M. Ramasubramani, DIG of Police, Tiruchi Range, who inaugurated the flower, photo and book exhibition, explained the spiritual significance of the flowers. He commended the Society for its activities for the benefit of mankind.

Sri Aurobindo Society, Tirupati observed the tenth anniversary of the enshrinement of relics

Overcome your fears to face divinity Deccan Chronicle
Home > Sunday Chronicle September 13th, 2009 By Mani Shankar

You will never experience God by just using more words. You need to go beyond — you need to overcome your fears and dive into deep pools of joy, you need to touch the source which created the mind in the first place. If you can do this, you will suddenly, spontaneously come face to face with Divinity itself. You will, as Sri Aurobindo said, ‘tear the veil from Deity’s face’. You will understand what every great Vedantic master has understood from the last 35 centuries, and like them, you will never be able to describe what you felt. When Buddha was asked about God, he looked at a flower and smiled in silence. Your answer will probably be the same. The author is a filmmaker. Email him at mani2shankar@gmail.com

The Hindu : Andhra Pradesh - Tirupati News : Tributes paid to Sri Aurobindo Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Rich tributes were paid to renowned spiritual guru Sri Aurobindo by his devotees and general public on Saturday. Devotees performed milk bath to his statue.
Sri Aurobindo Society’s Tirupati branch observed the tenth anniversary of the enshrinement of his relics at its NGO’s colony premises. Preserving physical parts or remnants as a relic is not only in remembrance of the great souls, but also to draw magical powers and inspiration from them. It is an age-old practice transcending faiths and religious affiliations. Sri Aurobindo’s nail and hair were enshrined as relics in the Tirupati branch alongside his statue, making it one of the 223 relic shrines in the world.
B. Venkatramaiah, a retired IAS officer and chairman of Sri Aurobindo Society’s state committee, explained the significance of relics. P.V. Ramasubba Reddy, principal of SV Medical College, said one could feel the area reverberating with tranquility due to the presence of the relics.
A book, Prayers and Meditation, authored by The Mother and translated into Telugu by Kamalakara Venkat Rao, was released on the occasion. M. Balarama Reddy, president of the Tirupati branch, explained the activities.

Hindutva Undermines the Pristine Values of Hinduism - Mainstream ...
Hindutva was very different from Sri Aurobindo's inclusive concept of Hindu nationalism which was not at all divisive.

Mainstream Weekly Home page > 2009 > 9) September 2009 > Vol XLVII, No 39, Hindutva Undermines the Pristine Values of Hinduism
Saturday 12 September 2009, by Sailendra Nath Ghosh

The word ‘Hindutva’ was coined by Savarkar with an underlying premise that the conglomerate of religious communities which, over the last one thousand years, has been known as Hindus is a separate nation within the Indian nation and Hindutva is its ideology. This concept was in some measure parallel to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan’s concept of Muslims as a separate nation. Hindutva was very different from Sri Aurobindo’s inclusive concept of Hindu nationalism which was not at all divisive. The RSS must admit that Hindutva’s basic premise was wrong and divisive, and that it must now bat for Bharatiyata so as not to have any scope for confusion.

The Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo by Rishabhchand

Christianity: An Integral Yoga?

In a recent exchange of views I 'stuck to my guns' on the belief that the body has a part to play in the Scheme of Things as does the soul — the subtext being that the body is the form of the soul, and that the soul manifests a form according to whatever 'world' or order of being it occupies ... from this perspective the 'disembodied soul' is an incomplete human being, and furthermore that the Resurrection holds the promise for the future realisation of the whole and total perfection of the individual human person in a mode of being that is veiled within the mystery of the eschaton. So it was with some subsequent surprise and delight that I picked up both (slim) volumes of "The Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo" at a car boot sale for the princely sum of 40p, and flicking through the pages came across this:
Quote:
The second postulate is that this union with Chatushpat Brahman (the Fourfold Brahman) can and is to be realised not only in the soul (psyche), but in the whole being (person) — the soul (psyche) and nature (ousia) — of man. The mind (nous), the life (physis) and even the body (soma) of man are to participate, as well as the soul (psyche), in the blissful experience of identity, union and communion (beatitude) with the Supreme Being (The Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo, author: Rishabhchand, pub. Shri Aurobindo Ashram Press, Pondicherry, 1953, p46 — Greek equivalent theological terms my insertion in parentheses)

Well, well ...
Quote:
Sri Aurobino says that each part of the being of man is derived from the Supreme, is permeated and sustained by the Supreme and is developed and led towards a conscious union and communion with Him which is its birth-right.

And it goes on ......

my gob is well and truly smacked! I always knew that Brahminic metaphysics is a profound discourse on the nature of being, and non-being, but this, so succinctly put, goes beyond my expectations.

This is the ground of true ecumenical discourse, as far as I'm concerned. With Eriugena's The Division of Nature (a recent and impatiently awaited purchase) on the one hand, and Aurobindo's Integral Yoga on the other, both of which assert that the Supreme is All in All, whilst resisting the temptation/assumption of any mode of pantheism, I'm set for some interesting times. Life, I love it! It's full of surprises! Pax bonum! Thomas

You viewpoint is very interesting, at least for me. You see, I belong to the West and, here, is common to think that only through the sorrows can the human being become wise. I am not wholly agree with you in this point. I think that a wise man ought to know to extract teachings from every situation...even if it is a good situation.
