Tagore remained suspicious and ambivalent towards mass politics

Dante, a poet for all seasons New Statesman - A N Wilson Published 09 June 2011 ‎Those who have yet to read the Divine Comedy are missing out on one of life's great aesthetic and intellectual experiences.
Yet Dante was the greatest poet of the Middle Ages. It could be argued that he was the greatest of all European poets, of any time or place. But while most non-Italian readers are prepared to take this on trust, they sidestep his work, making him one of the great unreads. In so doing, they leave unsavoured one of the greatest aesthetic, imaginative, emotional and intellectual experiences on offer.
They are like those who have never attended a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni, or of Shakespeare's Lear; who have never heard a symphony by Beethoven or visited Paris. Quite simply, they are missing out. S.Ghosh on Nov-12:
On July 23, 1923, Sri Aurobindo said, "Purification can come by the transformation of the impulse of violence. In that respect the old system in India was much better: the man who had the fighting spirit became the Kshatriya and then the fighting spirit was raised above the ordinary vital influence. The attempt was to spiritualize it. It succeeded in doing what passive resistance cannot and will not achieve. The Kshatriya was the man who would not allow any oppression, who would fight it out and he was the man who would not oppress anybody. That was the ideal. Gandhi"s position is that he does not care to remove violence from others; he wants to observe non-violence himself."

If there was anyone in the country who was aware and alive to the deep moral significance of Gandhi’s presence, it was Tagore, and despite this he remained suspicious and ambivalent towards the practice of mass politics. He, like Gandhi, was aware that Satyagraha was not and can never be a mere technique, an instrumentality. Previously, the Congress was able to brazen out scandalous truth through bullying, deceit, lying and political cunning. Now it hopes that by slandering Ramdev and the RSS, it will be able to put a lid on mounting allegations of corruption against the party and the Government
The world is a battlefield. All great gurus and avatars have incarnated themselves throughout the ages to help the forces of good, which in India are called ‘dharmic’, against forces which are inimical to the Evolution of Humanity and which are called ‘adharmic’, or even asuric. …
Sri Aurobindo, in one of his aphorisms, said something like this: “Even if god were to manifest himself in front of thy very eyes, you would not recognise him.” I am not able to judge Ramdev, but I can say with confidence that what he teaches is good, because it has benefited thousands of people.
As an atheist and a rationalist, I don't really put any faith in holy men, but Ramdev was a pretty rich guy who could have gone on living a luxurious life without any problems, and yet he decided to take on the ruling powers-that-be over the vital all-concerning issue of corruption, which is to his credit. We must also understand each of us is also trying in our own capacity to change things, so instead of being too critical of people, we must first look back at ourselves in the mirror and try to evolve to be perfect at every point of time. Also we can understand that the truthful and right and the just sources of power don't come down from heaven suddenly, they grow they are planted first nurtured watered nourished on this planet.
These seeds or what will be supramental seeds - are cultural forces which have the divine capacity to express the Sat-Chit-Ananda. Now, I will pledge all of us here in the forum to look back and see where the Culture in the world is heading towards and what is actually happening inside India. If the divine has to express, it will express through Culture.
They were most probably written in the time between his release from Alipore and his retreat to Chandernagore and Pondicherry. They illustrate that he had lost initiative and was waiting for the Divine to guide his next step.

Yes, when I am satisfied I know enough about that book to comment in an intelligent manner. It has been very interesting to follow the flow and ebb of the debate.
Mostly I have been reading and commenting infrequently only from my perspective to comments published in the debate, dealing with the principles of some aspects claimed for the book. There are inconsistencies in some published material but my knowledge of the book is still not adequate to know which inconsistencies are most valid. The debate has also covered a wide range of tangential-related topics, played against the original stated objective of SBI in makign the forum available.

We have started this essay from a position where human being as a race has reached a stage of its development and moving in a circle at some point of the evolutionary march where from it is imperative to have a leap farther. He is obviously in an evolutionary crisis. He has piled up huge comfort and externalities for the fulfilment of his desires and utilities of his mental, vital and physical propensities.  He has set up a structure of external life and a system of civilization with multifaceted social, political, administrative and cultural machineries which has become more than his present limited mental capacity to sustain and handle.

His progress has become halted at some point in the absence of a greater seeing mind, intuitive and psychic knowledge and vision which could provide him free growth, greater knowledge, power and force to uplift his present status beyond his material and economic existence. He needs discovery of his psychic being, his spiritual Person and makes itself the leader of his development and progress.

Sri Aurobindo learnt a lot about expressive skill from the Mother’s writings

Fleeing the colonial police, Aurobindo retreated to the French enclave of Pondicherry where he pursued, more vigorously than it had been possible when he was a revolutionary, the spiritual life. He read, meditated, and wrote. As his search focused further inwards, he gave fewer discourses and met fewer and fewer disciples. … Ramana and Aurobindo did not leave their ashrams for decades on end. 8:02 PM

Sri Aurobindo became a relaxed guru after 1926. Apart from that, the Mother’s influence might have been a significant force behind the clarity of his post-1926 letters. One suspects he learnt a lot about expressive skill from the Mother’s writings. There is an obvious change in his prose style in the 30s and the progressive clarity reached a supreme height in The Supramental Manifestation on Earth.

This started with five talks on the Supramental Transformation connected with her recent exhibition.  Eight presentations in seven weeks will include four of these talks, a talk on Savitri, a question/answer session on Auroville, and a talk to children.  She will speak at the AUM Conference in Lodi, the California Institute of Integral Studies and the Cultural Integration Fellowship in San Fransisco, the East/West Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and Meditation Mount in Ojai. Sathya Sai Baba: the Counterfeit Avatar Sunday, June 5, 2011 By Robert E. Wilkinson
India is the only nation in the world that can lay claim to a recurring history, eternally relevant and faithful to her ethos and cosmic culture, and the Vedic tradition of the Avatar is one of the most important symbols of her periodic renewal. […]
The process of human birth follows this very same principle with all life evolving from an original seed or embryo. The gestation of the human being occurs over a period of nine (9) months culminating with the birth of that which was originally involved. We find this same pattern of correspondences described in the Vishnu Purana in the form of the ‘Nine Creations’. And if we look at the Line of Ten Avatars within this context, we can easily see that the evolution of consciousness follows the same pattern. […]
