AUROSERVICE, Sri Aurobindo Bhavan
Tucked behind the lush lawns of Sri Aurobindo Bhavan on Shakespeare Sarani lies a small shop. It has been there for over 30 years, quietly serving as the socio-economic unit of Sri Aurobindo Society. It is one of Calcutta’s best-kept shopping secrets, the treasure trove that it is. From imli sauces to incense sticks, pasta to potpourri, copper plates to cosmetics, spices to scarves, Auroservice stocks it all. Most of the products are handmade in Pondicherry. This store may be simple but it is the soul that matters.
Oh, the prices don’t hurt either: the tags read from Rs 2.50 onwards.
P.S.: There are two shops on the premises — one as soon as you enter the gate and the other a short walk away. Auroservice is the second one. Take the walk. It’s worth it.
My Favorite Poem: Sri Aurobindo's Savitri | Red Room by Aju Mukhopadhyay
I like by heart some great poems, specially romantic and on nature, by Shelley and Wordsworth, and also some spiritual poems and those bordering the unknown by Walter De La Mare. May it be that Whitman entraps me with-

Bede on the other hand was a great admirer of the contemporary philosopher Sri Aurbindo, who had a far greater appreciation of created reality as lila–the play of God and therefore as a itself being a means of salvation; and Bede, following Aurobindo, always liked to point out that advaita was not the only interpretation of the Vedic revelation.

In an unending search for spirituality
In ancient times, Chinese scholars used to travel to
India to study Buddhism and to bring back Buddhist scriptures, some of which have been well documented in history. But Xu spent a much longer time there than any of them, although he did not have to walk or ride horses and camels across deserts and snowcapped mountains to reach his “dreamland”. For 33 quiet and, for most part, penniless years, Xu worked as hard as the ancient pilgrims, studying and translating India’s classical and modern writings. He was unaffected even by the loss of family members and the change of the national government back home.
He spent most of those years in Sri Aurobindo Ashram, an education center founded by Aurobindo Ghose (1872-1950) and led by Mirra Alfassa (known as the Mother, 1878-1973), in Pondicherry, southern India, where he started translating some of Ghose’s key philosophical works.

In Pondicherry, besides visiting Sri Aurobindo's ashram, we also visited Matri Mandir - one of the most spectacular meditation chambers in
India and perhaps the whole world - a round, all-white room situated at the top of what looked like a geodesic dome, which housed one of the world's largest crystals. Envisioned by The Mother, the purity of the crystal, all-white surroundings and pin-drop silence have an instantaneous effect of switching off one's thoughts. Matri Mandir resonates with an electrifying purity, and we sat there for about forty-five minutes soaking in the rarefied atmosphere. At both these spiritual centres, I can hardly remember the content of conversations with Eckhart; I think that's because hardly any took place.
