The Hindu : Other States - Puducherry News : Music fest to mark centenary celebration of Aurobindo arrival, Staff Reporter Thursday, Mar 25, 2010
PUDUCHERRY: Some of the biggest names in Hindustani and Carnatic Music will be performing in Puducherry to celebrate a significant event in the town's history. As part of the Centenary Year Celebrations of Sri Aurobindo's arrival in Puducherry, the Department of Art and Culture, the Department of Tourism and the Aurobindo Ashram are organising a Music Festival, to be held from March 26 to 28 at the Ashram Theatre on Suffren Street.
The Carnatic Nadaswaram vidwan duo Kasim-Babu will be enthralling audiences on March 26, at 6.30 p.m., followed by a Hindustani Dhrupad vocal concert by Uday Bhawalkar at 7.30 p.m.
Descendent of poet Subramanya Bharathi R. Vidya Bharathi and renowned sarangi player Murad Ali Khan will be performing on March 27, at 6.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. respectively.
As a fitting finale, March 28 would see renowned Carnatic music vocalist Bombay Jayashri performing at 6.30 p.m. and internationally renowned stalwart flautist Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia at 7.30 p.m., drawing the festival to a close.
It would be inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh at 6 p.m. on March 26, in the presence of Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam, and other ministers.
An emerging sound Pune Mirror
The members of Pondicherry-based band Emergence, hail from diverse cultures, play genres that are polar opposites but in the process, they have worked out a sound that sounds almost too natural.
The outfit cohesively plays a dose of jazz, funk and Carnatic music that subverts any comparison to be tagged as just another fusion trip.
“I live at Auroville in Pondicherry where I have started a farming community. We live a very philosophical lifestyle. The community is truly connected and the content of our life is very different.
Perhaps, this is the reason why our music is difficult to tag as it reflects in part the way of life at Auroville,” says Krishna McKenzie, singer-songwriter… Emergence will be playing new material and some old numbers from their album, when they perform in the city. Date: March 26 Time: 9 pm Venue: Near ABC Farms, Koregaon Park

How to rise above the ordinary life? « Integral Yoga of Sri ... by Sandeep
It is question we may ask ourselves at times "Why don't we progress spiritually faster?" Because we may meditate for fifteen minutes but, psychologically, the rest of our life remains untransformed. The way we eat, the way we talk, the friends we keep, the desires we nurture - none of these really change. As long as life does not deliver any adversities which throw us off-track, we let things continue and allow ourselves to languish. These are a couple of talk by the Mother Mirra Alfassa on how to rise above the ordinary life that we find ourselves in.
The Upanishads feature koans for contemplation called Vidyas(literally means knowledge). They are meant to trigger the mind into perceiving yet another facet of the Divine Reality thereby guiding the aspirant into deeper grades of meditation. In a previous post Vidyas in the Upanishads, five such Vidyas were covered: Bhuma, Prana, Shandilya, Madhu and Vaishvanara. The book Supreme Knowledge by Swami Brahmananda [3] lists an astounding 101 Vidyas drawn from the Upanishads. This post discusses a few Vidyas drawn from this book.
Various explanations have been proposed for the rationale of how and why the universe exists and manifests itself as it does, with the detail and order that is obvious on the one side, and the virtually limitless fantasy of forms we see on the other.

In The Synthesis of Yoga Sri Aurobindo explains that the supermind is a superior instrumentation of the spirit and all the operations of our normal consciousness are its limited and inferior derivations. Here is Sri Aurobindo’s Rose of God written in stress metre, each line with six stresses. These stresses are put in the following in blue font and are underlined. The five powers of perfection it speaks of are: Bliss-Light-Power-Life-Love, Ananda-Prakash-Shakti-Jivan-Prema. In the House of the Spirit where rules this law of Perfection we have the real presence of Rose, of the real Rose, the Rose of God. It is this Rose that has to bloom on the earthly soil, in the Garden of the Earth. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s yoga-tapasya is for that purpose. We shall some of the aspects of poetry of this Rose of God separately.
